Chicago Sky Star Skylar Diggins Blasts Franchise’s Early Struggles—Players to Staff

The season is starting to really move along; the Commissioner’s Cup is now underway. However, Chicago is not doing well. For this reason, Chicago Sky star Skylar Diggins blasts the franchise’s early season struggles from players to the staff.

From top to bottom, Diggins believes that in order for the Chicago organization to get better and onto a more successful path; everyone needs to make needed adjustments. Skylar is way past attempting to sugarcoat Chicago’s lackluster 4-7 start.

What led to Diggins speech of frustration to the media was the Sky’s latest loss to one of the league’s newest expansion franchises. The Chicago Sky was completely blown out, 85-68 in a weekend game against the Toronto Tempo.

On Sunday, Diggins told reporters,

“We gotta have more maturity and more leadership on and off the floor, from the players on the floor, from the staff as well, more connectivity.

If it was just versus one team, I’d understand that, but now it’s struggles versus… that’s a trend of ours.

It’s disappointing, it really is. It’s frustrating. The games ain’t going to slow down, the team’s are going to keep getting better. So we got to figure out how we’re going to turn this corner in here, but it’s been an extremely frustrating experience.”

So then, some hard conversations are going to have to be had, as Chicago continues to try find their new culture and identity. There is talent in place, but the way it is currently being developed or utilized is just not working.

Nonetheless, Diggins is not the first WNBA player to publicly discuss how the Sky is run. Before being traded to the Atlanta Dream, Angel Reese had lamented about the Sky’s lack of success. She told Julie Poe of the Chicago Tribune,

“I am very vocal about what we need and what I want,” Reese said. “I’d like to be here for my career, but if things don’t pan out, obviously I might have to move in a different direction and do what’s best for me. But while I am here, I’m going to try to stay open-minded about what I have here and maximize that as much as I can.”

Interestingly, Reese and her new team are firing on all cylinders. The Atlanta Dream are currently 7-3 and sitting atop of the Eastern Conference. Meanwhile, the Sky are about to be dead last in the East. Therefore, Chicago certainly has some work to do turn things around.
