Dallas Mavericks Announced Buyout Agreement With Klay Thompson as Miami Heat Intensified Pursuit
Thompson was acquired by Dallas from Golden State as part of a six-team trade on July 6, 2024. However, two years later he finds himself moving on yet again. The Dallas Mavericks announced today that the team has reached a buyout agreement with guard/forward Klay Thompson making him a free agent; as the Miami Heat intensified their pursuit.
The Mavericks posted a thank you to Thompson for being a part of their organization via social media. Additionally, they also released this statement on the Dallas official team website. Regarding Klay’s tenure with the Mavs, it states:
“The Dallas Mavericks announced today that the team has reached a buyout agreement with Klay Thompson. Thompson (6-6, 220) appeared in 141 games (80 starts) in his two seasons with Dallas and averaged 12.9 points on 40.3% shooting from the field and 38.7% from three.
‘Klay is one of the great players and competitors of his generation, and we are grateful for everything he brought to the Mavericks organization,’ said Mavericks President of Basketball Operations Masai Ujiri. ‘We have tremendous respect for Klay and all that he has accomplished throughout his career, and we wish him nothing but the best moving forward.’
On Jan. 15, 2026, the sharpshooter passed Damian Lillard for fourth place on the NBA’s all-time 3-point field goals made list. Thompson currently sits at 2,899 3-pointers made, and he is one of only five players to hit at least 2,800 threes in his career. Thompson made at least 200 3-pointers in both of his seasons in Dallas, bringing his total number of seasons with 200-plus made threes to 11. He is one of two players in NBA history to notch 10-or-more seasons with 200 3-pointers made.

With his Dallas tenure now in the books, it is the expectation that Klay Thompson will sign with the Miami Heat. Miami will add a 5-time NBA All-Star and 4-time champion to their roster that includes Giannis Antetokounmpo, Andrew Wiggins and Bam Adebayo.
ESPN’s NBA insider Shams Charania reports, “Klay Thompson is expected to sign with the Miami Heat after he clears waivers upon a contract buyout with the Dallas Mavericks, sources tell ESPN. Thompson and the Mavericks navigated a buyout from his $17.5 million expiring salary after the four-time NBA champion made it clear to Dallas that he wanted to play for a contender. The Heat made one of the NBA’s all-time greatest shooters their top free agent priority this summer to surround Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo and waited nearly two months on his release.”
