Dallas Mavericks Announce Team Has Mutually Agreed to Part Ways With Head Coach Jason Kidd

They didn’t have the best season despite having the Rookie of the Year on their roster. Therefore, new Mavericks president Masai Ujiri is making a coaching change. The Dallas Mavericks have announced that the team has mutually agreed to part ways with head coach Jason Kidd. The organization will immediately begin a comprehensive search for its next head coach.

Kidd was Dallas’ HC since 2021, which included an NBA Finals appearance in 2024. And Jason had 4 years and over $40M remaining on his contract in Dallas. Nevertheless, via social media platforms Instagram as well as X, the NBA franchise announced early Tuesday evening,

“We have mutually agreed to part ways with head coach Jason Kidd.

A Mavericks champion, Hall of Famer and coach who helped lead this franchise back to the NBA Finals. Thank you, Jason.”

Masai Ujiri officially got the nod to join the Dallas Mavericks organization as their Team President and Alternate Governor on May 4, 2026. Ujiri’s hiring followed a six-month front-office search. He took over all basketball operations for the Mavericks after previously parting ways with the Toronto Raptors in 2025. Nonetheless, Masai had this to say on Kidd:

“Jason has had a meaningful impact on the Dallas Mavericks, both as a Hall of Fame player and as the head coach who helped lead this franchise back to the NBA Finals. We are thankful for Jason’s leadership, his professionalism and his commitment to the team. In my short time here, I’ve developed an enormous amount of respect for what he has built. He will always be an important part of the Mavericks family.

As we evaluate the future of our basketball program, we believe this is the right moment for a new direction for our team. We have high expectations for this franchise and a responsibility to build a basketball organization capable of sustained championship contention. We will conduct a thorough, disciplined search for our next head coach and continue to evaluate our entire basketball operations staff to ensure we compete at the standard Mavs fans expect and deserve.”

Interestingly, both the general manager (Nico Harrison) and head coach (Jason Kidd) present for the selection of Cooper Flagg and trading of Luka Doncic are no longer with the Dallas Mavericks. Mavericks president Masai Ujiri will hold a press conference tomorrow at 10:30 AM CT at the American Airlines Center following the news that Dallas has parted ways with Jason Kidd.
