The freeway rivalry is underway, and it’s tied up at 1-1. Both fanbases regularly look forward to watching their favorite teams go to battle. This series is currently taking place at Petco Park in San Diego where Dodgers fans have gleefully gathered to cheer on the boys in blue. But it has been a difficult series thus far for the Dodgers and the latest news isn’t making it any better. As they battle the San Diego Padres the Los Angeles Dodgers have a decision to make about Freddie Freeman.

Superstar first baseman, Freddie Freeman is dealing with an illness. Dodger Talk host David Vassegh posted the following on social media:

“Dave Roberts said Freddie Freeman has been playing under the weather the last couple days.”

Since Freeman is not feeling well the Dodgers may choose to give him a short break in order to recover. However, they are embroiled in a tight race with their fellow NL West rivals. With their 5-4 win last night the Dodgers have a record of 30-19 while the Padres are at 29-19. They will play each other again tonight so if the Padres pull out a victory, they will be back on top of the division. Of course, the Dodgers don’t want that so what will they do? Will they give Freeman a break to rest and recuperate?

That may not be likely as Freeman proved himself crucial to the victory last night. Despite having what some would call a slow season compared to his usual standards. Last night he hit 2 home runs that put the Dodgers over the top. Perhaps being under the weather is good for both Freeman and the Dodgers?

Besides Freeman the Dodgers have also dealt with other injuries. Second-year pitcher and former Padres, Blake Snell begin the year on the 15-day injured list due to shoulder inflammation. Before his second start of the season his second start, Snell was scratched. Manager Dave Roberts revealed that he would need surgery to address loose bodies in his left elbow.

Tyler Glasnow is also out with a lower-back injury. Star slugger Mookie Betts was officially announced as being back on Monday after missing 32 games. Betts had been sidelined since April 4 with a right oblique strain. Should the Dodgers decide to rest Freeman, 25-year-old top prospect Dalton Rushing could have an opportunity at first base.

San Diego Padres fans are no doubt hoping the Dodgers will give Freeman a rest. That would be one less hurdle for their beloved Padres team to jump. We’ll find out in game 3 of the freeway series tonight at 5:40 PM pacific time.
