It was a surprise last minute scratch, but it was decided that Caitlin Clark would sit this one out. Last season Clark only played 13 games due to varying injuries. So, the Fever aren’t taking any chances with their star player. Caution is the word of the day when it comes to managing Clark. Nevertheless, the Indiana Fever routed the Portland Fire with Aliyah Boston leading the way without Cailin Clark. However, Kelsey Mitchell was right there with Boston to lead the Fever to victory.

Boston scored the first basket of the game while Mitchell scored the second. And from there the duo went on to score a combined 45 points in the 90-73 victory. The Fever selected Boston with the first overall pick in the 2023 draft. And ever since she and Mitchell have been building a chemistry between them which was on display last night. They were busy last night helping each other with assists, three of Mitchell’s went to Boston and two of Boston’s went to Mitchell.

Fever coach Stephanie White said regarding Boston: “She did exactly what we need her to do,” White said of Boston. “You know, she takes control of the offense when we need her to, [she’s] breaking the press when we need her to, but I thought overall just her conviction and everything she did was really good.”

Boston recorded 24 points and eight rebounds. She shot 8-for-11 from the field, including 2-for-4 from 3-point range. “It feels great to see them go in,” Boston said of her 3-point shooting. “I’ve been working on that a lot in the offseason and to see them finally start to go in a little bit just feels great.”

It’s great to see Boston stepping up and leading the team along with Mitchell, Sophie Cunningham and Lexie Hull. However, Clark is still an integral part of the team. Despite playing fewer games last season, she still made her mark. And she’s doing so again this season thus far. In her first four games, she has logged 20+ points and five assists, tying the longest such streak to start a season in WNBA history.

In the Sunday game against the Seattle Storm, she recorded 21 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds getting the 89-78 and ending a two-game home losing streak. When the Fever have both Boston and Clark healthy and playing at the same time they could make some noise. After all it was Boston and Mitchell who got the Fever to the WNBA semifinals last season. And no doubt they hope to do that again and more.
