Chris DeMarco Will Not Be Retained as Head Coach of the New York Liberty
NY did not like how the season ended. They did not care for how the postseason did not result in a longer run. For these reasons, the franchise is making some changes. Chris DeMarco will not be retained as head coach of the New York Liberty.
Previously, the Liberty had fired former head coach, Sandy Brondello; after winning a championship. The organization hired Chris DeMarco to deliver a new direction, and are now moving on from him after one season. DeMarco, 40, previously spent 14 seasons with the NBA’s Golden State Warriors where he was part of four championship-winning coaching staffs.
Chris DeMarco led New York to a 26-18 record this season and the No. 8 seed in the playoffs. They were ultimately eliminated by the Atlanta Dream in the second round after a disappointing series performance and timeout fiasco. Now the Liberty will seek their third head coach in three years.
DeMarco clearly disappointed and did not take New York to the levels they were hoping for this season. But there were some high points during his tenure. For instance, the Liberty won the Commissioner’s Cup and finished above .500 with a semifinals exit after sweeping the top-seeded Lynx.
But there were too many cons for New York to focus on any pros. ESPN’s Alexa Philippou confirmed the news regarding DeMarco’s departure from the Liberty stating,
“Breaking: Chris DeMarco will not be retained as head coach of the New York Liberty, sources told ESPN. In his sole year at the helm, New York went 26-18 and was the No. 8 seed in the playoffs before getting swept by the Atlanta Dream in the semifinals. The Liberty will now seek their third head coach in three years.”

So then, what is next for Breanna Stewart, Sabrina Ionescu and the franchise as a whole? They need to find a coach who is primed and ready to help take them all the way, because time is ticking. The Liberty simply must maximize the window of having Breanna Stewart on their roster. One of the greatest players in women’s basketball history.
With the firing of DeMarco it shows New York is not fooling around when it comes to winning with this core and the search thus continues. According to USA Today’s Mitchell Northam, Vanessa Blair-Lewis, Kelly Graves, Roneeka Hodges; Kristi Toliver and Teresa Weatherspoon are a few names the Liberty might consider as the HC search begins.
