Nikita Kucherov Has Requested a Trade From the Tampa Bay Lightning
It would not be right for the sports week to conclude without a massive Friday bombshell and SHOCKER. A 33-year-old hockey star has decided he wants to play elsewhere. Nikita Kucherov has requested a trade from the Tampa Bay Lightning. Therefore, a divorce seems imminent.
ESPN hockey reporter Emily Kaplan was among the first to break the news regarding Kucherov stating,
“Nikita Kucherov has requested a trade from the Tampa Bay Lightning, sources tell ESPN.
Negotiations between the Lightning and Nikita Kucherov’s camp remained far apart. He’s an unrestricted free agent this summer, and is due for potentially double his $9.5 million AAV.
Kucherov let his teammates know of his decision today. He has a modified no trade clause, which allows him to give a list of 10 approved teams.
Believe Kucherov has his eyes set on playing with another one of the league’s top superstars and has a few players/teams in mind.
We’ll see what moves the Lightning can, or are willing to, pull off.”
But still, all of this begs the question of WHY? Why exactly does Kucherov wish to leave? SportsNet’s Elliotte Friedman reports,
“The exact reasons are unclear at this point, but Kucherov — the NHL’s reigning MVP — is in the final season of an eight-year, $76-million contract. Last week, he passed Steven Stamkos as the leading scorer in franchise history.
Both Lightning GM Julien BriseBois and Dan Milstein, Kucherov’s agent, declined to comment.
For most of us, Kucherov staying in Tampa seemed like an absolute certainty. Obviously, we were wrong about that. Who knows where we go by the trade deadline and July 1, but Kucherov has made it clear he is not happy and, at this time, prefers another path.”

So then, some very wild news emerging out of Tampa. Kucherov will not be resigning. Instead he wants out.
Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic confirmed these developments by mentioning, “Nikita Kucherov and his agent Dan Milstein just wrapped up a meeting within the last half hour with Tampa GM Julien BriseBois advising that the Hart Trophy winner is asking for a trade. Kucherov told his teammates on the plane.”
