Red Wings Suspend Dylan Larkin Without Pay After He Informs He Will No Longer Play For Them

Dylan Larkin’s time with the Red Wings has reached a closing point. A phone call was made and Detroit had a quick response. The Detroit Red Wings have suspended Dylan Larkin without pay after he informed the Red Wings he will no longer play for them, the team announced.

“To put it simply, we received the call from Dylan’s agent today just saying that Dylan no longer was going to be coming to the rink and no longer wants to be a part of the Red Wings,” interim general manager Shawn Horcoff said on Thursday. The trade request remains in place, and the Red Wings will look to find a trade partner. Horcoff said he’s ideally seeking NHL-ready players, but is open to any deals.

Shawn Horcoff later in an expanded statement that was posted by the Red Wings social media page added,

“Dylan Larkin has informed us that he will no longer play for the Detroit Red Wings. We are disappointed by his decision, particularly given his obligations to the organization and his teammates. We have therefore suspended Dylan without pay.

We will continue to explore trade opportunities involving Dylan. In addition to needing his approval, any trade must also be in the best interests of the Detroit Red Wings and support the organization’s long-term goals.

I want to thank and commend our coaches and players for their continued focus, and being committed to competing every day.”

Dylan Larkin could forfeit over $41K per day as the Red Wings suspend him and he isn’t traded. Nevertheless, Detroit’s ex-captain believes there have been trades discussed and nearly completed with teams on Larkin’s trade list.

As this development progressed, a statement from Pat Brisson, agent for Dylan Larkin, regarding his client deciding not to play while awaiting a trade emerged. Brisson says,

“Dylan’s had enough of the situation. We believe he’s been very professional and cooperative through this process.”

NHL senior columnist for The Athletic, Pierre LeBrun reports,

“There were talks in the the last 24 hours between Larkin’s camp and the Red Wings, both last night and again this morning, and what was communicated from the agents to Detroit was that Larkin feels he’s given the team ample time since his trade request in May to get a deal done. Larkin has had enough, so decision was made he won’t play tonight nor for foreseable future hoping a trade materializes. Fluid situation still. Red Wings circling back to teams with interest, etc., as talks escalate.”

Red Wings GM Shawn Horcoff ended his press conference with one last thought on Dylan Larkin sitting out. He says, “I’m prepared to wait as long as necessary to make sure the return we get is good overall for the Red Wings … with the teams he has on his list, it’s difficult to get something done in a trade like this.”
