Bo Bichette Exercised His $42M Player Option to Remain With Mets

While 2026 did not go the way New York had hoped or expected. Their core is sticking together and looking towards better days. One such piece being their third baseman. Late Thursday afternoon it was confirmed that Bo Bichette has exercised his $42M player option to remain with the Mets.

Major League Baseball senior writer for The Athletic, Will Sammon, was all over it. Regarding Bichette’s decision to stay with the Mets, Sammon reports,

“Bo Bichette is exercising his $42 million player option for next season and staying with the New York Mets, league sources tell The Athletic.

Bichette, 28, holds another player option worth the same amount for 2028.

In other New York Mets news:

“The Mets are hiring Deron Johnson as a special assignment scout, league sources said. Johnson had spent more than three decades with the Minnesota Twins, notably as scouting director and last working as a senior advisor.”

Bo Bichette hit .260/.312/.390 in his first season with the Mets in 2026. The eight-year veteran owns a .288 career batting average and .788 OPS. Nonetheless, he got off to a very slow start but ended up having a much needed turnaround during the season.

After spending his entire career with the Toronto Blue Jays before coming to New York, Bichette, 28, struggled through the first quarter or so of the season as he acclimated to a new environment and new position (third base). By May 17, he was hitting just .210 with a .531 OPS. Over his final 114 games, however, Bichette produced a .281 batting average and .772 OPS with 16 home runs.

But with the Brewers now winning the World Series (congrats to them bringing home Milwaukee’s first title); now teams and players can start to think and plan for the future. The Mets poor season was due to player inconsistency as well as multiple injuries. For instance, stars Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto were MIA for quite some time.

Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor dealt with two major injuries during the 2026 Major League Baseball season. While outfielder Juan Soto dealt with multiple lower-body and hand injuries during the 2026 Major League Baseball season, playing in 108 games total. But now everyone has time to finish getting healthy.

Furthermore, with Bo Bichette opting in to 2027 with the Mets; it provides the ball club a chance to finally see the group they built to anchor their lineup last year. Can this group of Mets players become a real force and contender? We will see.
