Mets Have Named Andy Green Their Full-Time Manager—Signs 3-Year Deal
The New York Mets removed the interim tag in order to give this temporary skipper a well-earned promotion. The Mets have named Andy Green their full-time manager. Additionally, he has signed a three-year deal with the club.
Steve and Alex Cohen on Andy Green: “Andy has connected with and pushed our players to perform, despite the disappointment of the season. Over the last several months he has brought discipline, accountability and positivity to the clubhouse, attributes we were seeking in our next manager. We want to congratulate Andy, his wife, Jessica, and their three daughters. We are excited for his continued leadership in the dugout.”
Marcus Semien on the Mets naming Andy Green full-time manager:
“I’m glad they did. Everybody’s happy. Since Andy stepped in, he’s helped a lot of guys be a better version of themselves, and we’ve been playing a good brand of baseball.”
Senior writer for The Athletic, Will Sammon, backs up Semien’s sentiments. The New York Mets team were hoping for this particular outcome. Sammon reveals,
“There were a lot of people within the Mets hoping Green would be the full-time manager. That includes players. Asked a couple Mets veterans recently what they wanted in a manager. Funny, in different conversations they offered the same one-word answer before adding more: “Andy.”
On Tuesday afternoon ESPN’s Jorge Castillo helped to break the news regarding Green. He also provided a quick summary of what lead up to this moment. Castillo reports,
“Andy Green has agreed to a three-year deal to remain Mets manager after this season. Green took over as interim manager when Carlos Mendoza was fired in late June. He had insisted he wanted to return to the front office after the season, but he’ll continue in the dugout.”

Green’s change of heart has now turned into pure excitement. Andy is looking forward to building and developing something special with the Mets organization. Case in point, a statement from Andy Green, via the Mets, on this huge news:

When I accepted the interim role, I didn’t anticipate it becoming permanent, but the more time I spent with our players and staff, the clearer it became that this is where my passion and experience could make the greatest impact. That realization led to many conversations with my family, and together we agreed this is the right opportunity at the right time. I want to thank Steve and Alex for the love, ambition and commitment with which they lead this organization, and David for the trust he has placed in me. I believe deeply in what we can build together, and I’m honored to continue serving our players, this organization and the amazing Mets fans.”
In several ways, Andy Green represents what clubs look for in a modern manager. And after a season in which so much change went terribly wrong, the Mets get to keep some continuity. Congratulations to Andy Green.
