New York Mets Officially Eliminated From Postseason Contention—Two Years in a Row
After a hole was dug early on, the Mets could not seem to emerge from it and recover. The New York Mets have officially been eliminated from postseason contention. They’ve missed the playoffs in 2 consecutive seasons after making the NLCS in 2024.
This means back-to-back seasons without the postseason after New York acquired the services of Juan Soto (15-year, $765 million deal). On the night Pete Alonso returns to Citi Field as a Baltimore Oriole and Soto’s former team; the New York Yankees clinch a playoff berth. The Mets are officially mathematically eliminated from playoff contention. Ironic.
For the Mets, money is not an issue. While there are baseball fan bases who only dream of having an owner who is willing to spend. The Mets are flush with cash, having one of the highest payrolls in Major League Baseball. In fact, the Mets have the second-highest payroll in the MLB, at a reported $344 million for the 2026 season. Juan Soto, Bo Bichette, and Francisco Lindor alone account for nearly $150 million. Therefore, it is not a lack of financial support crippling this franchise.
Nonetheless, while 162 games make up a long season. Having a couple bad stretches can still leave a ball club in a bad way. The Mets’ 12 game losing streak in April and the 7 game losing streak in June were the two things that did them in, and the resulting mountain was too tall to climb.
Mets’ Injuries and Manager Woes
Additionally, being hit with the injury bug didn’t do any favors either. New York’s two superstars, Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto missed significant time. By late June, Lindor and Soto had played just nine games together this season. Both players would miss 45-50+ games. Thus, culminating in the franchise only amassing 69 wins by the time of elimination. Good enough for dead last in the National League East. A division that also includes the Atlanta Braves, Philadelphia Phillies, Miami Marlins and Washington Nationals.
If the Mets want to get back to being in contention for a title they have a lot a work to do. For one thing, stabilizing things with a new manager. The New York Mets fired manager Carlos Mendoza on June 26, 2026, following a 34-47 start to the season. The ball club was already toiling through a six game losing streak at the time of the firing. Mendoza finished his tenure with a 206-199 record over two-plus seasons. Front-office executive Andy Green was named interim manager for the rest of the season.

But still, all hope is not lost. Although the season has brought much pain to Mets fans, some young talent have shone through. Players like Carson Benge look promising. Benge adjusted his mechanics after a slow start and went on to hit 17 home runs, driving in 57 runs, and successfully stealing 22 bases while being an elite outfielder.
So then, there are pieces to work with roster wise. Hopefully everyone will get and stay healthy. And the Mets will make moves to improve pitching (and add another big bat) to get themselves onto a better path.
