Mets Announced Departure of Carlos Mendoza as Manager-Andy Green to Be Interim Manager
When an organization is having an abysmal season, you can only expect for there to be changes at some point. New York has finally reached that stage. On Friday, the Mets have announced the departure of Carlos Mendoza as manager; Andy Green will be the interim manager for the remainder of the season.
The Mets are currently below .500 and there does not seem to be a path towards a turnaround in sight. As Michael Baron of SNY points out,
“Carlos Mendoza had been forced to use 5 different first basemen, 4 of which aren’t first basemen, 6 different third basemen, 5 different shortstops, 11 different left fielders, 4 different centerfielders, & seven different right fielders through the season’s 1st 81 games.”
Buster Olney of ESPN added to Baron’s sentiments mentioning, “A rival executive said earlier this season that the Mets would be doing Carlos Mendoza a favor if they fired him. Because there was no real apparent hope for a turnaround. It’s a flawed roster, and I don’t think the Mets’ W-L record will be held against him when future opportunities arise.”
Carlos Mendoza ends his tenure as Mets manager with a record of 206-199. But the real question is, who would want to take the manager role next? Well, there is one name that keeps popping up. And it’s actually a really solid choice. John Harper of SNY says that he,
“Heard from a source today that Albert Pujols in recent weeks had let friends know he’d very much want the Mets’ manager job if and when they moved on from Mendoza. Pujols managed DR team in WBC, has a very strong relationship with Soto.”
The DR team performed well under Pujols. And if Albert can bring the best out of Soto; then this could prove a positive move New York.

Carlos Mendoza has already released some thoughts on this situation. His words were very appreciative and positive. He also included some parting words specifically for Mets fans. Here is the official statement from Carlos Mendoza:
I would like to thank Steve and Alex Cohen.
They are tremendous owners who care deeply about their people, their families, and the entire organization. I am grateful for the opportunity they gave me to lead this team.
I also want to thank David Stearns for giving me the chance to manage at the major league level. It was a privilege to work alongside him every day, and I greatly appreciated his support, trust, and partnership.
Thank you to everyone throughout the Mets organization, especially our coaches, staff, and players. The relationships we built and the memories we created will stay with me forever. I will never forget our special postseason run in 2024 and the resilience, commitment, and passion that group showed every day.

Finally, thank you to the fans. Your energy, loyalty, and unwavering support made it an honor to wear the Mets uniform and represent this organization. I’m sorry I couldn’t bring a championship to Queens.
New York will always hold a special place in my heart. I leave with tremendous gratitude, pride in what we accomplished together, and confidence that the future of this organization is bright. I wish the Mets and their fans nothing but success in the years ahead.
Carlos Mendoza is the latest manager to experience the chopping block this season. Earlier the Phillies parted ways with Rob Thomson and the Red Sox waved bye to Alex Cora.
Mendoza’s temporary replacement has quite the hill to climb. But perhaps not much is expected for the rest of the season. Andy Green will serve as interim manager. Green, who has been working in the Mets’ front office, compiled a 274-366 record as manager of the Padres from 2016-19.
