Al Horford Will Become 13th Player to Play 20 Seasons After Declaring Return to Warriors

At his age he still has hops. He has to be feared by his opponents because after so many years he can still hoop. Joining the Golden State Warriors last summer, he made his presence known bringing his extensive experience to the Bay area. Declining his $6 million player option, Al Horford will become the 13th player to play 20 seasons after declaring return to Warriors. He can return to the Warriors once free agency begins next month.

According to ESPN he will sign a two-year, $14 million contract and the new deal will be fully guaranteed and includes a trade kicker. Horford will now play his 20th and 21st seasons with the Warriors. The other 12 players he will be joining in playing 20 seasons are:

LeBron James, Vince Carter, Chris Paul, Dirk Nowitzki, Kevin Garnett, Kevin Willis, Robert Parish, Kyle Lowry, Udonis Haslem, Jamal Crawford, Kobe Bryant and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

Speaking about that milestone, Horford made the following comment:

“I knew a few off the top of my head, but I hadn’t seen the list,” Horford told ESPN. “It’s hard to believe. It’s something that, for me, I’m very grateful. It’s just so hard to be in this league for that amount of years. There’s a lot of commitment, a lot of sacrifice and time. I still feel like I’m able to contribute and have an impact on a team.”

Horford will be reunited with Stephen Curry who is 38 years old and is entering his 18th season, but still a detriment to other opponents. 36-year-old Jimmy Butler is starting his 16th NBA season, and 36-year-old Draymond Green is going into Year 15. The team is definitely older but will be tough to contend with having so much veteran experience.

That clearly wasn’t an issue for Horford, as he wanted to see his decision, on joining the Warriors, through. He commented:

“I want to see it through,” Horford said. “That [injury] kind of put a damper on things. Jimmy is a very special player, and he was doing so much for us. I feel like things were starting to turn.”

Horford is not just there as a veteran presence or rah-rah kind of guy. Last season he averaged 21.5 minutes last season, scoring 8.3 points and grabbing 4.9 rebounds while making 36.1 percent of his three-pointers. Obviously, the Warriors are hoping that Horford with Butler, Curry and Green they can make a run at another championship next season.

“If the group is healthy, if we’re together, I feel like we’re going to compete,” Horford said. “I don’t want to think too much ahead, but once we’re able to get Jimmy and [Moses Moody] back … we have a very competitive group and we’re going to do the best that we can.”

With his new contract in place, we’ll see what Horford and the Warriors can do next season. Congratulations Horford!
