Dodgers Dave Roberts Reveals Edwin Diaz’s Rehab Assignment Results Have Not Been Good

The playoffs are just around the corner. Teams are already working out their postseason rosters. However, for the blue men, their closer is still nowhere close to being ready. The Los Angeles Dodgers Dave Roberts reveals that Edwin Diaz’s Triple-A rehab assignment results have not been good.

For the 14th straight season, the Dodgers have punched their ticket to the postseason (tying an MLB record). They have won 91 games. Therefore, A LOT is going right for LA. However, the ball club still hoped to have Diaz making better progress by this point in time.

Katie Woo of The Athletic reports, “It was made very clear, this is not a guy who’s ready or mechanically sound. He might be healthy enough to throw the baseball, he’s not mechanically sound for him to come up and really be a factor. Given Díaz’s disastrous outings before landing on the IL and the mechanical changes he needs to make to recapture his former success, it would not be surprising if the Dodgers draw out his stint as long as needed.”

Dodgers beat writer, Fabian Ardaya added,

“Dave Roberts said ‘it hasn’t been good’ with Edwin Díaz, results-wise, on his rehab assignment. He allowed five runs yesterday with erratic command. Roberts left the door open that Díaz isn’t on the postseason roster if his performance doesn’t improve.

Roberts: ‘I think the world of him. The baseball card looks great. But it’s like, where we’re at, there’s got to be something for us to be able to hang our hat on. And he knows that.’”

So then, Edwin Díaz has looked anything but sharp in his rehab assignment with Triple-A OKC. Which is now jeopardizing his status on the postseason roster.

Manager Dave Roberts said Edwin Diaz will pitch again on Wednesday in OKC. However, Dodgers decision makers will be “watching closely” to determine if he can come back to be part of bullpen. The final line from Edwin Díaz’s latest rehab start with the Dodgers’ Triple-A affiliate: 0.2 IP, 2 H, 5 R, 2 BB, 1 HBP.

That’s 10 ER allowed across 7 games in just 5.2 innings. This was supposed to be a short rehab assignment, but the Dodgers have not seen enough from Díaz. Dave Roberts summed things up by saying, “He needs to pitch better. It hasn’t been good.”
