Chiefs Rashee Rice to Miss OTAs and Mini Camp Due to Serving Original Sentence
After missing the playoffs, Kansas City is working hard to turn things around. However, there is another snag. They will be down one of their key playmakers when they meet soon. On Tuesday, it was confirmed that the Chiefs Rashee Rice will miss OTAs and mini camp due to serving his original 30-day sentence.
Sports reporter Matt Foster was first on this latest Rashee Rice episode. He reports,
Chiefs WR Rashee Rice violated his probation after testing positive for marijuana. Rice has been ordered to serve 30 days in jail, meaning he will miss the Chiefs OTAs & Mandatory Mini-Camp.
Statement from the NFL on the matter:
“We are aware of the report and will decline further comment at this time.”
And now a statement from the Chiefs:
“We are aware of the reports and have been in touch with the league office. We will have no further comment at this time.”
Reminder of upcoming offseason workouts:
OTAs: May 26-28, June 1-3
Mandatory minicamp: June 9-11.”
Nate Taylor who writes and reports on all the Chiefs’ various developments for ESPN added, “Some clarity here. Adam Schefter and I can report that Rashee Rice is serving his original 30-day sentence as part of him pleading guilty to felony collision involving serious bodily injury & racing on a highway causing bodily injury in a multicar crash in Dallas in May 2024.”

Regardless of recent events, Rice was always going to have to serve the 30 days in jail no matter what as a mandatory condition of his original plea deal. The judge handling Rashee’s case had mercifully and originally gave Rice a unique privilege: he could choose when to serve those 30 days over the course of his 5-year probation, even allowing him to break the time up, provided the court approved the schedule. This allowed him to avoid missing mandatory team activities.
However, now that Rice has unfortunately failed a court-ordered drug test by testing positive for THC, he violated his probation terms. And this unique privilege has been revoked. Rice was booked this afternoon in Dallas County, Texas, and will be released from custody on June 16.
