For a time, it seemed as though both sides were making decent progress toward an agreement. Now talks have stalled. Pistons Jalen Duren turned down Detroit’s latest offer in the five-year $190 Million range.
According to Sam Amick of The New York Times, Duren has doubled down and tried to make his point about the financials by his absence. Jalen Duren has chosen to keep his distance from the Pistons this summer.
– Did NOT attend the San Diego team minicamp Cade Cunningham coordinated the week of Aug. 23
– Did NOT attend the Labor Day team party at owner Tom Gores’ home in Southern California
Now, Jalen Duren is reportedly rejecting the Detroit Pistons’ five-year, $190 million offer and is seeking more than $200 million. Sam reports,
“Per league sources, Detroit’s last offer was a five-year deal in the $190 million range. Duren, who is eligible to receive a five-year, $287 million contract, is seeking at least $200 million. As is the case with any player’s contract negotiation, the use of player or team options in the deal significantly impacts the final number.”
However, the 22-year-old All-NBA center is running out of time. A huge decision that could have major implications when it comes to his bank account’s future and career is now sitting squarely in his lap. Take the large sum now, or the QO. The Pistons will also need to decide to payout or possibly trade Jalen. If Duren accepts the QO, the Pistons’ front office will be forced to decide whether to deal Jalen if a long-term deal doesn’t materialize.

The clock continues to tick and now Duren has twenty-one days. That’s how long Jalen Duren has to decide whether to take the most extreme route available in his stalemate with the Detroit Pistons: the $9.6 million qualifying offer that has a current deadline of Oct. 1.
Nonetheless, there could be a plot twist about the Oct. 1 deadline. Since the league’s collective bargaining agreement allows Detroit to push back the qualifying-offer deadline to as late as March 1. This could buy both parties more time.
However, Jalen does have some leverage in this situation. It was just two summers ago that Duren saw his Pistons co-star, franchise centerpiece Cunningham, ink a five-year deal that was ultimately worth a combined $269 million (because he made All-NBA). Additionally, the Houston Rockets’ Amen Thompson just inked a five-year, $208 million extension in early September. A deal that would seem to strengthen Duren’s position as a solid comp. While the 23-year-old Thompson is a pivotal player for the Rockets, he was not selected to either an All-Star or All-NBA team last season. Duren was named to both.
