Phoenix Suns Center Mark Williams Will Miss Extended Time After Undergoing Surgery
With the start of the new season just six short weeks away; no NBA franchise wants to have to deal with unexpected injuries. However, the Suns are finding themselves in this unfortunate position when it comes to their center. The Phoenix Suns center Mark Williams will miss extended time after undergoing surgery on Thursday.
Confirming Williams’ surgery, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported, “Phoenix Suns center Mark Williams underwent surgery Thursday to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder and will miss an extended period of time, sources tell ESPN. Williams suffered the injury in an offseason workout.”
Sports Talk Radio Show Host, John Gambadoro, for Arizona Sports 98.7 added, “Yes Mark Williams injured his shoulder in a scrimmage and had surgery – he will be out for a considerable amount of time. The Suns are expected to have a release sent out shortly. This injury will have Mark Williams out several months from what I am told. There is no timetable on his return at this point. While there is no timeline being given on how long Mark Williams will be out. From what I am being told we should expect at least 5 months recovering from shoulder surgery.”
As one can see, that’s a considerable amount of the upcoming season. However, there is still plenty of light at the end of the tunnel for the Suns. Although, Williams missing in action is not ideal; there are other players on the roster who shall plug in flawlessly.
For instance, there’s backup Oso Ighodaro who played every game last season. Additionally, there’s 7-footer Khaman Maluach who saw limited action as rookie, but played very well in Summer League in Las Vegas. Most likely, Khaman Maluach, the Sun’s prized 2025 lottery pick, will now become Phoenix’s starting center.

The Suns carried an elite 103.5 defensive rating last season when Khaman Maluach was their primary rim protector. With Mark Williams now out indefinitely, Maluach is primed for a gigantic Year 2 jump as their full-time starting center.
During Summer League, Maluach was dominant while flashing a potentially elite shooting stroke:

So then, it will be interesting to see how Maluach plays and continues to develop for the Suns. Additionally, hopefully Williams is able to heal and get healthy to rejoin the Suns sometime down the road. If the supposed timeline for Mark’s recovery revealed by Gambadoro holds, five months would be the All-Star break. That’s 58 games in.
