It used to be fun watching the Pro Bowl game after the Super Bowl had already been played. It was a chance to say goodbye to the regular NFL season and look forward to the next. But that was when the game was held in Hawaii every year. More players were inclined to show up for the festivities. But after the games were moved back to the continental United States interest in the Pro Bowl game waned. So, it’s not surprising that the NFL is ending the AFC-NFC Pro Bowl game but will focus on those selected to the Pro Bowl.

The National Football League today announced plans to elevate Pro Bowl presented by Verizon selection as one of the league’s most meaningful individual honors, recognizing exclusively the very best players from each NFL season.

Beginning with the 2026 season, 88 players will comprise the official Pro Bowl presented by Verizon class, with no replacement selections. The roster will continue to be determined through an equal-weighted voting process among players, coaches and fans.

By limiting the honor to the 88 players originally selected, the Pro Bowl presented by Verizon will return its focus squarely to recognizing the league’s most outstanding performers, reinforcing the significance of an achievement held in especially high regard by players themselves.

As part of that focus, the NFL will no longer stage an AFC vs. NFC Pro Bowl game. Instead, the league will place greater emphasis on the moment a player is selected, the recognition that accompanies that distinction and bringing the Pro Bowl presented by Verizon class together to celebrate the achievement.

When the Pro Bowl game had been held in Hawaii, players would show up. It was a treat to go all-expenses paid to the tropical oasis. However, when players started making more money and could pay for their own fabulous vacations the lure of the Pro Bowl faded. But besides that, the game never garnered the type of ratings that a regular season game did. Due to fear or risk of injury the players didn’t go all out on the field. Remember guaranteed contracts are virtually a new thing in the NFL. Players did not want to put their future earnings at risk. I can’t blame them for that.

Nevertheless, commissioner Roger Goodell had this to say on the matter:

“I think this is something that we talked to our players about, the Pro Bowl players in particular,” Goodell said, via Mark Maske of Front Office Sports. “We had conference calls the last couple years: What’s working? What’s not? What would you like to see? And the number one thing that came out—and there were a lot of wonderful comments by the players—one is: ‘We want to be honored and celebrated as a Pro Bowl player.’ . . . It just opened my eyes. I never really thought about it in the context of that. It’s not honoring the replacement players. It’s honoring the guys who are selected by the fans, by the players, by the coaches.”

The Pro Bowl Game Will Be a Thing of the Past Going Forward

For die hard football fans, the Pro Bowl game was the last dose of professional football for a while. But not everyone was so desperate to see football that they would bother watching the Pro Bowl. The changes the NFL made over the years to spark more interest never worked. Now a tradition that began decades ago is coming to an end.

However, with the emphasis being placed on those who are selected it gives the selection more credibility. Players who were great throughout the season will now be recognized for their efforts. Replacement players are a thing of the past. If a player wants to be a Pro Bowler, he’s going to have to earn it. That’s a good thing for the players moving forward.
