Philadelphia Flyers Have Lost First EIGHT Games of Season—Worst Start in Franchise’s 59 Year History

So far, things are just not looking good. Philly is steadily making history but for all of the wrong reasons. The Philadelphia Flyers have lost their first EIGHT games of the season, making it the worst start in the franchise’s 59 year history. This passes the previous record of 7-games that was set last game. They have scored just 10 goals in 8 games.

It only gets worse in Philadelphia: The Flyers have now lost 8 straight games to start the season, with a -21 goal differential. The next worst in the league is -7. This Philly team now becomes the eighth Philadelphia Major Pro Sports Team to go WINLESS for at least the first EIGHT games of a season. The 76ers, Phillies and Eagles have also had rosters achieve this feat going as far back as 1883. Moreover, Only five teams in Philadelphia pro sports history have gone longer into a season before recording a victory than this year’s Flyers.

However, there were some signs of life, an actual pulse coming from the Flyers. Philadelphia played their best game of the year; storming back to tie it at 2-2 in the third period. Second most shots in a game so far for them.

The Flyers unfortunately lost in a shootout, but they at least played better hockey. Rick Tocchet’s club is now 0-5-3 and has been outscored 30-10 (excluding the shootout goal). Last season, Tocchet’s first as the team’s head coach, the Flyers were 4-3-1 through eight games and had scored 22 goals.

“This is something to build on,” Tocchet said of his team’s effort in the shootout loss. “I know it’s the moral victory thing, but it is, it’s something to build on.”

Philly had more company in the league up until now at least. The Calgary Flames (6 GP) now have a win before Philadelphia thanks to getting a win over the Ducks. Only Los Angeles (5 GP) and the Flyers (8 GP) remain winless.

However, if you are the type of sports fan that enjoys a bit of irony in the morning with your coffee. Consider this: The last team to start an NHL regular season 1-7-0 through their first eight games and still make the playoffs was the… drumroll please… 2013–14 Philadelphia Flyers.

So then, there is still plenty of time to right the ship. The season is young and it is early. However, the Flyers may want to make haste before they continue to add on to the legacy they will soon wish to forget.

Only four teams in NHL history have opened a season with 11 consecutive losses:

1943 Rangers
2017 Coyotes
2021 Coyotes
2023 Sharks
