Phillies Sign Manager Don Mattingly to Two-Year Deal Through 2028

It was an absolute roller coaster of a season. Highs and lows, but Philadelphia made it to the postseason. Despite an early playoffs exit the franchise is already preparing for the future. And one decision so far has involved the role of manager. On Wednesday morning it was announced that the Phillies have signed manager Don Mattingly to a two-year deal through 2028.

Online Philadelphia kept their announcement regarding Mattingly short and sweet. They heralded the news via social media. The organization posted, “The Phillies have signed Don Mattingly to a two-year contract for the 2027 and 2028 seasons.”

Furthermore, New York Times, Matt Gelb, broke the news early Wednesday stating,

“The Philadelphia Phillies are retaining Don Mattingly as manager, committing to him with a two-year contract that runs through 2028, the team announced Wednesday morning.

Mattingly, who led the team to a 79-55 record after assuming managerial duties in late April, had his interim tag expire almost two weeks ago when the Phillies were eliminated by the Atlanta Braves in the Wild Card Series. He was under contract for the 2027 season as bench coach. Hiring Mattingly as manager marks a doubling down on the Phillies’ current vision after a near-historic September collapse and another postseason gone wrong.

It’s also a vote for familiarity; Mattingly is one of several recent prominent hires for which the Phillies looked inward rather than conducting an external search. With an owner-imposed MLB work stoppage expected to begin Dec. 2, Mattingly at least knows the players after serving as the interim boss.”

Major League Baseball will most likely see less managerial turnover than normal this offseason. A big reason is likely because of the labor situation. The only teams seeking a new manager are the Seattle Mariners and the Houston Astros.

Nonetheless, Don Mattingly went 79-55 to get into playoffs after taking over a 9-19 team. Mattingly guided the Phillies to the postseason after being promoted as interim manager just 28 games into the season. But more change may be on the way. The Phillies could also make changes this offseason to Mattingly’s coaching staff, which he inherited from former manager Rob Thomson.
