And the international games continue for the NFL in Week 3. The Baltimore Ravens will battle the Dallas Cowboys in South America on Sunday, September 27. Many NFL fans do not like the international games because it takes games away from the United States. Fans of either team have to travel to Europe or South America, or even Australia! However, they now have one more reason to dislike international competition. The NFLPA has raised concerns over field conditions at Maracana Stadium ahead of the game in Brazil.
The stadium is located in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil and is one of the most famous stadiums in the world. It’s well-known for hosting Brazilian football matches or soccer as Americans like to call it. Yet even the Brazilian players have expressed grievances about the playing field. They have publicly stated in recent weeks complaints about bumps, deteriorating grass and difficulty controlling the ball.
NFL Insider Ari Meirov posted on social media about the issue: “There are concerns about the field conditions at Maracanã Stadium in Brazil, where the #Ravens and #Cowboys are scheduled to play next Sunday Soccer players who have played there recently have complained about the field, saying there are bumps everywhere and that it keeps getting worse, per @MauNFL. One more soccer game is scheduled to be played there before preparations begin for Ravens-Cowboys.”
JC Tretter, the executive director of the NFL Players Association, posted a long message on social media about the field conditions. In part he wrote: “The concern heading into this week was that the field would be loose, patchy, and lead to excessive slipping. Those conditions are generally more of a playability and performance issue than a significant injury concern. But safety isn’t the only standard.”

Player safety should always be the top priority. However, performance matters almost as much. Fans are expecting to see the best that players have to offer. Hence, Tretter went on to say: “Players should be able to perform at the level they expect of themselves and that fans expect from them. A thin, slick field may not present the same risks as a surface with too much traction, but it still affects performance and the quality of the game.”
It would be a shame for fans from the USA to travel to Brazil just to see sloppy play or worse, players getting hurt. Therefore, the Dallas Cowboys are taking precautions. “The Cowboys are likely going to take an extra precaution to prepare for potentially bad field conditions by wearing special cleats, head coach Brian Schottenheimer revealed on Thursday.” as reported by Mike Moraitis Sports Illustrated.
It would be better for all parties involved if the National Football league would just stay home.
