He spent five years as the basketball head coach in Big D. However, when the new general manager came in, Masai Ujiri, he was dismissed from his position. So, he is pivoting and going in a different direction for now. Former Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd is joining ESPN as an analyst. There has been some discussion as to whether Kidd plans to take a year off from coaching or is just waiting for the right opportunity to come along. Larry Brown Sports had reported back in May of this year that the Orlando Magic was interested in Kidd. They decided to take a different path.

During his five-year tenure in Dallas, Kidd compiled an overall record of 205-205 with a 22-18 record in the playoffs. He has 10 years of head coaching experience going 388-395 (.496) overall. He has made two conference finals appearances and one NBA Finals appearance as a head coach, all with the Mavericks. Prior to coaching in the NBA, Kidd was a player. He was a 10-time All-Star during his NBA career and led the Mavericks to a championship over LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, and the Miami Heat in the 2011 Finals.

In addition to that Kidd earned Rookie of the Year in 1995, was named to nine All-Defensive Teams, is a five-time assist champion, and was recognized as one of the NBA’s top 75 players, before transitioning to coaching. It’s no wonder that Kidd wants to get back into coaching. He loves the game and wants to be a part of it. Joining ESPN as an in-studio analyst will keep him close to the NBA action.

Speaking on his new position with the sports network he posted about it on social media:

“Excited to join @ESPNfor the 2026–27 season! Looking forward to working with some amazing colleagues and legends of the game, and providing my perspective in the studio for @ESPNNBACountdown!”

Kidd has more on his coaching resume than just the Mavericks. He also coached the Brooklyn Nets during the 2013-14 season; he spent the first four seasons of All-Star Giannis Antetokounmpo’s career guiding the Milwaukee Bucks before landing a head coaching job for the Mavericks. But for now, Kidd will be working alongside Malika Andrews, Kendrick Perkins, Brian Windhorst, and senior NBA insider Shams Charania on ESPN’s NBA Countdown broadcast.

Certainly, Kidd will provide analysis from both a player and coach perspective for ESPN. However, he clearly wants to coach again so where will he end up? Likely we’ll find out more after the 2026-2027 NBA season. If not sooner…
