I suppose it was inevitable after losing to a winless team. But of course, it would take more than losing to a winless team for a person to lose his job. More bricks had been laid on this road to termination. Such as being unable to bring a winning quarterback to the organization. The organization’s last great quarterback, Andrew Luck retired in 2019. Luck of course stepped up to the plate after Hall of Famer Peyton Manning was released in March 2012. However, after those two guys the struggle has been real to find a franchise quarterback. It hasn’t happened so far. Therefore, the Indianapolis Colts have relieved general manager Chris Ballard of his duties after 10 years with the organization.

We all know football is a team sport so all the blame cannot be laid at the quarterback’s feet. In this case, Daniel Jones, formerly of the New York Giants is the quarterback. But as ESPN Colts/NFL reporter Stephen Holder posted on social media:

“Jones needs a solid team around him that he can help get to the finish line. Here, he is being asked to do more than that. And I don’t see him as a guy who can truly lift his team. On Daniel Jones, it’s a perfect storm IMO: Injury recovery, offensive line mishandling blitzes, bad options at WR, and shaky decision making. He needed a perfect situation to succeed, and this ain’t that. But the “why” doesn’t matter. Bottom line: Not good enough.”

Holder also pointed out that he believes the season Jones had last year was an anomaly. Yikes! But if he is right about that then the quarterback search will continue for the Colts. They have other issues to address such as linebacker depth and running game struggles. Which apparently, they don’t believe Ballard was able to do.

“I am grateful to Chris for his years of service to the Colts and for everything he poured into this organization. He cared deeply about our team and our community, and we wish Chris and his family all the best.

“As I said at the start of the season, the sense of urgency has never been higher. Our standard is to compete for championships, and I believe a change in leadership is necessary to meet that standard.

“Making this change during the season was a deliberate decision. Waiting would only delay the important work that needs to begin now. We will conduct a thorough search for our next general manager and take the time necessary to identify the right leader for the future of this organization.

“I also want to be clear: this decision does not change our goals for the season. We have a lot of football in front of us, and I expect us to compete, improve, and win football games.”

Making a change sooner rather than later is a good way to try to salvage the season. The question is can they find the right replacement?
