Mexico Defeats South Africa 2-0 in FIFA World Cup Opening Match
South Africa and Mexico kicked off the World Cup today from the Estadio Azteca AU. South Africa and Mexico are the only pair of teams to ever play each other in a World Cup opening match twice. Fans enjoyed an unforgettable opening match back in 2010 in Johannesburg and also took in action today in Mexico City. 16 years ago, host nation South Africa and Mexico played to a 1-1 draw. Siphiwe Tshabalala opened the scoring for South Africa, and Rafael Márquez later equalized for Mexico. What about now in 2026? Things went much differently, Mexico defeats South Africa 2-0 in the FIFA World Cup Opening Match.
South Africa could never mount much in the way of offense. Most of their time was spent on the opposite side of the field. Never really forcing Mexico to have to play much defense.
The only real positive for South Africa was their goalie. South Africa’s primary goalkeeper and captain for the 2026 FIFA World Cup is Ronwen Williams. Williams defended well for most of the game, blocking several shots by Mexico that seemed prime for success. However, his efforts would overall be thwarted by Mexico’s elite play.
The first goal of the 2026 FIFA World Cup would ultimately belong to Mexico. Julián Quiñones scores the opener against South Africa. Fitting since Quiñones is fresh off winning the Saudi Pro League Golden Boot with 33 goals.
Nonetheless, later on, Raúl Jiménez would score his first World Cup goal in his home country; bringing Mexico’s lead to 2-0. This is all the scoring that Mexico would need, South Africa would never mount a comeback. Especially, after being shown red cards that would lead to less players on the field and a clear disadvantage.
