Denver Broncos Signed Head Coach Sean Payton to New Five-Year Contract

As hard as it seems to be believed, he has been with the team for three years. And during those three years the team’s record has improved every year. Among active NFL head coaches, he ranks No. 2 in most regular season wins. Behind Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reed who is also the longest tenured head coach in the NFL with the departure of Mike Tomlin. Nevertheless, the Denver Broncos have signed head coach Sean Payton to a new five-year contract.

Owner and CEO Greg Penner announced the deal on Thursday. Regarding the new contract he said:

“Sean Payton has led an impressive turnaround over the past three seasons, instilling a winning culture with high expectations,” Penner said. “I appreciate the close partnership he shares with George Paton along with the alignment and stability across our football operations.

“We’re thrilled for Sean to continue leading our team as head coach, building on our prog

ress during such an exciting time for the Broncos.”

Prior to taking the Broncos job in 2023, Payton had spent 15 years coaching the New Orleans Saints. It would have been 16, had Payton not been suspended for the entire 2012 season. The suspension came just 2 years after the Saints’ Super Bowl win over the Indianapolis Colts in Miami. In 2012, the NFL suspended Payton for a year without pay after it was revealed that the Saints ran a bounty program that rewarded players for injuring opponents between 2009 and 2011. He went on to coach the Saints from 2013 through 2021 following his reinstatement, guiding New Orleans back to the NFC Championship game in 2018.

However, the Broncos have let bygones be bygones and are moving forward with Payton. They want the improvement and the winning of the Broncos to continue.

Payton’s 194 overall wins puts him in 12th place for most in NFL history. Among those wins are 10 playoff victories with four conference championship game appearances. He has 184 regular season wins and is 76 games over .500 for his career to rank ninth in league annals. Payton has 37 years of experience, including 27 seasons at the NFL level, and is a Super Bowl winner. So, it’s not difficult to see why the Broncos wanted to keep him inhouse.

Formerly he coached quarterback Drew Brees who is likely a potential Hall of Famer. Now he has quarterback Bo Nix, who was selected 12th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft. Nix became just the third quarterback in league history to win at least 10 games and make the playoffs in each of his first two seasons. It looks like the Denver Broncos have the correct head coach/quarterback combination now that Payton has been signed to his new contract.
