Tina Charles Announced Her Retirement After 14 Seasons in the WNBA

After a storied basketball career that included more than a decade in the WNBA, two national championships at UConn and three Olympic gold medals. This former number one draft pick has decided it is time to say farewell. Tina Charles announced her retirement from basketball after 14 seasons in the WNBA.

Her résumé is one that demonstrates just how effective she was on both ends of the court. Look up Tina Charles and you will find the following accolades:

No. 1 Pick in 2010 Draft
2010 ROY
8x All-Star
9x All-WNBA
4x All-Defensive
4x Rebounding Champ
2x Scoring Champ
2012 MVP

Furthermore, Charles is also second all-time in scoring (8,396) behind Diana Taurasi (10,646); and leads the league in career rebounds (4,262) and field goals (3,364). She’s both a legend and a true leader with every franchise she’s been a part of, and especially last season on the Sun.

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert issued the following statement regarding Tina Charles’ retirement announcement:

“Tina Charles has defined excellence and consistency throughout one of the most remarkable careers in WNBA history. From earning unanimous Rookie of the Year honors to being named league MVP, to becoming the WNBA’s all-time leading rebounder and second all-time leading scorer, Tina’s impact on the game will be felt for generations to come.

Beyond her extraordinary accomplishments, Tina has represented the very best of the WNBA throughout her career. Through her leadership and dedication to giving back – including her work with her Hopey’s Heart Foundation – she has made a meaningful impact far beyond the game, earning the Dawn Staley Community Leadership Award twice. On behalf of the WNBA, I want to thank Tina for her lasting contributions to the league and the sport of basketball. Her legacy will be defined not only by her excellence on the court, but by the standard she set as a leader, a teammate, and a champion for the communities she touched.”

Tina Charles also released a lengthy, heartfelt statement about her experiences and her reasons for retirement. Charles stated,

“It was all a dream, that’s the thought that keeps finding me. That, and deep gratitude. God has covered my life in ways I can’t fully put into words, and by His grace and mercy, I’ve been able to live out something bigger than I ever imagined.

Today, I officially announce my retirement from basketball.

Fifteen years at the professional level and a lifetime of love for this game. I’ve experienced the highest highs and lowest lows, and I’m thankful for all of it. Through it all, I learned how to show up. When doubt got loud and narratives were written without me, I kept showing up.

That’s the New Yorker in me, where resilience is built, not talked about.

Growing up in Queens, New York, basketball wasn’t just a game, it was a language, a rhythm, its survival, its expression. It pulled me in early, and I gave myself fully to it. It shaped me into the woman I am today and for that, I wouldn’t change a thing.

At some point, you have to edit your life. Not everything and not everyone is meant for the whole journey. Growth requires honesty, and for me, that meant recognizing when my impact was being called in a new direction. That’s not failure, that’s clarity. I’m at peace with this decision, aligned with what I’m being called to do next, making space for someone else to step in and grow the way I once did.

It would be impossible to name everyone who has poured into my life, but I want to say thank you.

To my parents, Angella and Charlie, you are my foundation.

Mom, you made me believe I could do anything.

Dad, this game brought us closer, and I’m forever grateful.

To the programs that shaped me, NY Gazelles, Liberty Belles,

Christ the King, and UConn, this is where my discipline was sharpened, my standard was defined, and my purpose was strengthened.

To my family, friends, coaches, teammates, and fans; every WNBA and overseas organization I’ve been blessed to represent; USA Basketball; the WNBPA and NBPA; the personal trainers and performance coaches I’ve worked with over the years who kept me ready; the WNBA Chaplains who fed my spirit along the way; and my representatives over the years Wiesel Sports, The Team, REBRAND, and Octagon, thank you for your belief and for being part of my story.

And to my late aunt, Maureen “Hopey” Vaz, through Hopey’s Heart Foundation, thank you to everyone who supported that mission. Together, we’ve placed over 500 AED’s, helped save a life, and expanded access to life-saving cardiac health resources in communities around the world. You gave me balance, perspective, and a deeper understanding that what I do for others will always matter more than what I achieve for myself.

This game gave me everything, and I’ll miss it deeply.

But like my mom always taught me, don’t stop at what you’ve done, keep going toward what you still see. And I still see so much.

There are still dreams in my heart waiting to be lived, and I can’t wait to share that journey with you all.

Much love!”

Tina Charles won two national championships with the Huskies, took home National Player of the Year as a senior in 2010 and went on to be the No. 1 pick in the WNBA draft. Next stop most definitely is the Naismith Hall of Fame. Charles was a true trailblazer of women’s sports. Thank you for everything and enjoy your retirement Tina.
