What a first round! For weeks much speculation had mounted on who would be the first pick of this year’s draft. Top players discussed in early 2026 draft projections included: Awa Fam (Spain), Azzi Fudd (UConn), Lauren Betts (UCLA), and Olivia Miles. For thirty years now the league has witnessed 30 first round picks make an impact as well as basketball history. The very first pick in WNBA history was Tina Thompson. Tina was selected number one overall by the Houston Comets in the inaugural 1997 WNBA Draft. A forward from USC, Thompson was a key player in the Comets’ dynasty, winning four consecutive WNBA championships.
But now, three decades later the league is thriving. The WNBA is now turning a profit, and with the newly negotiated CBA; players have a real pro career path making $300k to over a million; with salaries set to only increase. Women’s basketball is certainly in a new era.
