Tiny Cape Verde Shocked the World Cup 2026 by Playing Powerhouse Spain to a Draw
For a team making its world cup review they certainly made a big impression. Given that they had never qualified for the World Cup, before not much was expected of them. And certainly not against a former World Cup champion. Nevertheless, a team from a small nation off the coast of Africa snatched global attention in their first match. Tiny Cape Verde shocked the World Cup 2026 by playing powerhouse Spain to a draw. Meaning the match began and ended with 0-0. Needless to say, no one predicted this surprising outcome.
Cape Verde is the third-smallest country ever to reach the men’s World Cup finals. They have a population of around 590,00 people but their team is composed of many diaspora players having European league successes such as Dailon Livramento. The Hellas Verona forward was instrumental in helping Cape Verde qualify for the World Cup. But once they got there, credit had to be given to their 40-year-old goalkeeper. He would not let anything get past him for the duration of their first match.
Being a European champion, Spain was expected to win the match handily what with the -1200 to beat Cape Verde. Veteran goalkeeper Josimar Dias, better known as Vozinho, was everywhere as the Spanish could not find a way to get past him. Not even their teen phenom, who came into the game in the second half could crack the code of Vozinha and the Cape Verde defense. Because they played so well the crowd went wild holding impromptu emotional celebrations inside the stadium.
Hence, the Cape Verde head coach shared his thoughts on the win:
“This means everything for our country,” Cape Verde coach Pedro Leitão Brito said. “We have always said that we wanted everybody to see our country, our team and we have shown organization and braveness and this is proof of what our country is about — resilience and to try to overcome hardships.”

Sadly, visa issues prevented Vozinha’s mother from attending the debut game. Although he cried after the powerful game he said that it was because his late grandparents could not see him play and his mom, Ana Candida Evora, was also absent during such a big moment.
“She didn’t manage to be here because … of the money we have to pay for the visa. We didn’t manage on time,” Vozinha told reporters postmatch. “I would like (for her) to be here …”
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries stepped in to resolve the issue. He posted a statement on social media.
“It is a privilege to announce that Vozinha’s mom will be able to secure a visa in time to attend their game this Sunday against Uruguay,” Jeffries posted in a statement on social media Wednesday. “All fees have been waived consistent with official policy. Travel arrangements are now being made for mother and son to reunite in Miami.”
Yay we just love feel-good stories here. Cape Verde is turning heads and goalie Vozinha will now have his mother cheering on him and his team in person. On a side note, Vozinha has become a social media sensation. He went from about 50,000 followers on Instagram to over 14.2 million and counting. Wow!!!
Congratulations Cape Verde on your impressive milestone!
