Michigan Coach Dusty May Finalizing Deal to Take Dallas Mavericks Head Coaching Job
The search is finally over. After mutually parting ways with Jason Kidd after five seasons back in May, Dallas has concluded its search for a new HC. On Monday morning it was confirmed that Michigan coach Dusty May is finalizing a deal to take the Dallas Mavericks head coaching job.
ESPN’s Shams Charania along with Adam Schefter and Pete Thamel helped break Dallas’ coaching news. Charania reported,
“BREAKING: University of Michigan coach Dusty May has agreed to become the new head coach of the Dallas Mavericks, sources tell me, Adam Schefter, Pete Thamel. Major college-to-pro jump for the 2026 NCAA championship coach and swing for the Mavericks and Masai Ujiri.”
Pete Thamel also took a moment to discuss Michigan’s future as well as next steps, and what actions players have the right to take due to May’s departure for the NBA. Thamel reveals,
“[Dusty May] led Michigan to a 64-13 record over two season there. In his previous job, he led FAU to back-to-back NCAA tournaments, including the 2023 Final Four. He’d ruled out other college jobs this off-season, but the NBA has always been intriguing to May. Per new NCAA transfer portal rules players have a 15-day portal window that begins five days after new coach is announced.
[Moreover] promoting Mike Boynton internally as a continuity play by keeping roster in tact looms as a logical option here. Michigan is working toward hiring Mike Boynton Jr. as interim coach. Michigan players have been told that this is the expected direction.”

Yes, Dusty is certainly qualified to help lead Dallas to ultimate success and victory. As they say, once a champion, always a champion. May led Michigan basketball to the national title in April. Furthermore, the allure of coaching the dynamic Cooper Flagg proved to be a linchpin piece to help draw him to the Mavs organization.
Additionally, Dallas is not allowing any grass to grow under their feet when it comes to roster construction. They are looking and considering all possible options. According to Marc Stein, “The Mavericks are actively exploring trade options, league sources say, while also preparing for Nos. 9 and 30 in Tuesday’s draft.”
