She’s really BACK. Serena Williams had already been given a wildcard to play alongside sister Venus in the Wimbledon doubles, but her return just got even more real. Serena Williams will compete in the 2026 ladies’ singles at Wimbledon as a wild card, Wimbledon announced.

Yes, Williams will play singles at Wimbledon in her tennis comeback at age 44. She is receiving the last wildcard for women’s singles at Wimbledon. Furthermore the 7-time champion will be playing this event for the first time since 2022.

Once the smoke started bellowing and the train left the station; you could easily begin to see where this was all heading for Williams. Indeed, Serena playing doubles is nice, but a return to singles just felt imminent. And now the ultimate comeback is in play. Serena last played singles at the 2022 U.S. Open, ending the first part of her career in a three-set loss to Australia’s Ajla Tomljanović. Four years later she hopes to get back to being a true contender.

Moreover, Williams is still very good for the sport. She brings worldwide buzz and attention to tennis tournaments. Yes of course, Wimbledon has no issue getting tennis enthusiasts to attend. Even royalty regularly partakes. However, despite the tournament selling tickets without her influence; the truth is with Serena Williams comes tv deals, increased merchandise sales, ads revenue and social media engagement. Such drivers cannot be overlooked in today’s digital media landscape.

Nevertheless, the tennis realm has plenty to look forward to at the very end of June. Serena Williams is filling the final spot in Wimbledon’s main draw. Serena’s first-round opponent will be revealed when the draw takes place on Friday, June 26. The tournament will commence on Monday, June 29.

Williams was intentional in leaving the door open for a return four years ago, saying she’d be “evolving away” from tennis instead of explicitly saying she was retiring at the time. For Williams, a return to Wimbledon’s historic grass courts is simply adding to an already legendary resume. She’s won 23 major titles in her career, including seven Wimbledon singles championships, leaving her one win short of Margaret Court’s long-standing women’s record of 24 Grand Slam wins. She also boasts a career ‘Golden Slam’ in singles and doubles, having won all four Grand Slams and Olympic gold and every singles major at least three times. Welcome back Serena.
