Former Tennis Superstar Serena Williams Makes Return After Four Years in Retirement

For years she held the tennis world in her hands. It appeared that she was somewhat unstoppable. However, in time marriage and children slowly drew her away from her longtime passion. So then, she finally decided to move on from playing the sport she loved so much. However, watching her big sister, Venus Williams recently playing in tournaments again; and wanting her young children to see her swing a racket. Now it looks like little sister has gotten bit by the tennis bug once more. Therefore, former tennis superstar Serena Williams makes a return after four years in retirement.

On Tuesday, Williams returned to professional tennis but not as a single player. She competed in a women’s doubles match at the Queen’s Club tournament in London. She played with Victoria Mboko a Canadian teenage player.

As she walked onto the grass court she was given a standing ovation. This despite the crowd having earlier seen British players Emma Raducanu and Katie Boulter secure wins in the singles tournament at the HSBC Championships. Serena and Mboko played against third-seeded duo Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Erin Routliffe.

Williams is also set to compete in doubles at the Berlin Open in Germany. So, will this be the start of her return to singles play also? She had this to say on the matter:

“I feel like I probably need to train a little bit more if I want to play singles, and we’ll see if I get there, and if not, that’s not my journey right now.”

Williams didn’t say that she was retired back in 2022. Rather she said she was going to evolve away from tennis,” telling Meghan Markle, “I’ve been doing this since I was…since I can remember. And I’m 40 years old now, so it’s like my whole entire being and my whole entire life has been for one purpose. So, to kind of not do that anymore, it’s exciting, right? I’m really looking forward to it.”

Although this doubles match was her first one back since her evolvement, she and Mboko came off the victors in a 7-6 (7/2), 6-2 win. Throughout her career she has won 23 Grand Slam singles titles, including seven at Wimbledon. Williams also has 14 Grand Slam doubles titles, including six at Wimbledon — all with her older sister Venus Williams. So, the question remains will she continue on her comeback tour? Many believe this match was a precursor to her playing in Wimbledon. If so, then we look forward to that with great anticipation.

In the meantime, we welcome Serena back to tennis. We’re happy to see her thriving on the court again!
