She has been playing lights out for over a year. And now all the hard work is showing for one and all to see. Elena Rybakina clinches the World No. 1. ranking with her quarterfinal win over Qinwen Zheng. Therefore, look for her name on the top of the rankings this Monday.
27 year old Elena Rybakina will become the 30th ever WTA World #1 after reaching the US Open semifinals for the first time. On Wednesday morning, Rybakina defeated the Olympic champ Zheng Qinwen 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 to reach the last four in New York. Furthermore, as Elena becomes the new world number one it will bring an end to Sabalenka’s reign of almost 2 years.
Nevertheless, Elena Rybakina is definitely deserving of the number one ranking. From last October to March this year, she won 12 consecutive matches against top 10 players. 7 of them were against the top 5. Two were over the reigning World No. 1.
She has played the best. Elena has beaten the best. Now she will officially sit at the top of the world rankings. Moreover, Rybakina will become the 30th woman to be ranked world No.1 in singles since the WTA rankings began in 1975.

Elena Rybakina discussed with the media her feelings after beating Qinwen Zheng to become the new world No. 1 at U.S. Open. While the accomplishment is wonderful, she refuses to lose her focus. She says,
“It’s just a number right now. Of course I’m in the semis, so my goal is to win the tournaments I play. I go a match at a time. It’s an amazing achievement.”
Being ranked first is amazing, but that’s not the only legacy that Elena will cement for herself this week in tennis. In fact, it is the last four women standing at the US Open singles bracket that are all making history together. It’s the first time since the 1975 US Open that the top four seeds have all made the semifinals. Additionally, it is the first time since 2009 Wimbledon, we will have a women’s grand slam semifinal line-up featuring ALL TOP 4 SEEDS. So then, this tournament is shaping up to get more exciting and thrilling!
