Lakers Announce Hiring Miami Heat Vice President of Player Personnel Eric Amsler as Assistant GM
He’s basically been a huge part of constructing one of the better development farms in the NBA. Now he will have the chance to use his skills with the purple and gold. And with Los Angeles not possessing a ton of draft picks he will be the perfect front office fit for helping find gems in the draft and g league as well. On Wednesday, the Lakers announced that they are hiring Miami Heat Vice President of Player Personnel Eric Amsler as an Assistant GM.
ESPN NBA insider, Shams Charania reported on the Lakers’ newest hiring stating,
“The Los Angeles Lakers are hiring Miami Heat vice president of player personnel Eric Amsler as an assistant general manager, sources tell ESPN. Amsler – who spent over 22 years in the Heat organization starting as an intern and working his way up in various scouting, personnel and G League roles – joins Rohan Ramadas as assistant GMs under president Rob Pelinka.”
So then, Rob Pelinka is fulfilling his pledge to build out the team’s front office. At the end of the last season Pelinka revealed to the media,
“A lot of the infrastructure is being built. I’ll be headed to the combine. We will continue to staff out with assistant general manager positions. There’s a couple of those that we’re currently interviewing for and have done an extensive dive in that process. Those will be two key pillars that we’ll add for this offseason.”

The Eric Amsler hiring comes as the Lakers navigate the transition from Mark Walter’s tenure to a new ownership led by Josh Kushner. Furthermore, Eric Amsler‘s résumé speaks for itself. Some of his achievements include:
22 years in the Miami Heat organization under Pat Riley and Erik Spoelstra
GM of the Sioux Falls Skyforce (Heat’s G League affiliate) from 2019-2023
Named 2024 G League Basketball Executive of the Year
Sioux Falls made two straight Western Conference semifinal appearances under him
Dickinson College graduate (’99) with a psychology background
Will focus on pro scouting, draft scouting, and player development for the Lakers
Joins Rohan Ramadas as the second Assistant GM under Rob Pelinka
The Lakers are seamlessly moving forward despite an ownership change. Nonetheless, Josh Kushner is a minority owner of the Miami Heat (he’ll have to divest to purchase Lakers).
