Ben Shelton Ended Carlos Alcaraz’s Undefeated Record Against Americans at US Open
It took some time to make it happen but in the fifth set it finally became a reality. On Wednesday morning September 9, 2026. All it took was for him to play the tennis match of his life. It was practically a miracle that Alcaraz made it to the quarterfinals after having missed over four months of playing due to a wrist injury. Nevertheless, Ben Shelton ended Carlos Alcaraz’s undefeated record against Americans at the US Open. The five sets didn’t conclude until after 3 AM EDT!
It was the final match of the night that spanned 4 hours and 28 minutes. It ended as the latest night in US Open history. But Alcaraz is no stranger to late nights as he and Jannik Sinner’s match in 2022 ended at 2:50 a.m. ET. Still these late nights have got to take a toll on the bodies of the tennis players. However, the late night didn’t stop Shelton from being elated over his victory. In his on-court interview he said:
“It’s incredible. I always say this is the greatest sports city in the world, I say that this is the greatest stadium in the world … I’m just so grateful, so blessed,” Shelton said in his on-court interview. “Sharing the court with Carlos is an absolute honor, and I cherish every moment I have out here.”
With the win, Shelton will now face Frances Tiafoe in an All-American semifinal on Friday, Sept. 11. Tiafoe also had a heart-stopping match against Alex Michelsen earlier the same day. Tiafoe made an excellent comeback to get the victory over Michelsen. However, Michelsen is still young and we expect to see more of him in the future. But for now, it’s about the semifinal match between Shelton and Tiafoe.

Both men are happy to have two days off as they recover from their grueling matches. Presently Tiafoe is the 11th seeded player in the world while Shelton is number 8. Shelton has a 3-1 record over Tiafoe and won the 2023 US Open quarterfinal match against him. But that’s in the past and now Shelton will need to focus on the future. Because there has never been a better time for an American man to win his maiden Grand Slam and snap the 23-year record for winning a Grand Slam. Andy Roddick is the last American man to accomplish this at the 2003 US Open.
That’s quite the drought for American men in the US open. But we know that there will be an American man in the Finals this year. But who will it be? We can hardly wait to find out and wish the best for both men!
