It was a long time coming to get the deal done. As the start of the new season approached, things were still uncertain. But confidence had been expressed that things would move along to everyone’s satisfaction. Now their number one cornerback has been locked down. The New England Patriots and shutdown cornerback Christian Gonzalez agreed to a contract extension. According to ESPN:
“The Patriots have agreed to terms with star Christian Gonzalez on a four-year, $135M deal, sources sources told @JFowlerESPN. Gonzalez will become the highest-paid CB in the NFL with this new deal.”
“Christian Gonzalez is the first Patriots first-round pick to sign an extension with the team since Dont’a Hightower, who was their 2012 first-round pick. Drake Maye comes next year.” per NFL Insider Adam Schefter.
The extension will allow Gonzalez to earn a $33.75 million average annual value with $102 million guaranteed. He has earned a reputation as a lockdown cornerback as indicated by his first Pro Bowl selection last season. And he was a second-team All-Pro selection in the 2024 season. He was selected with the 17th overall pick by the Patriots in the 2023 NFL Draft. Therefore, this was his first-time being extension eligible. Obviously aware of that fact the Patriots took steps to ensure he would remain with the team.
And as Adam Schefter pointed out, “Christian Gonzalez is the first Patriots first-round pick to sign an extension with the team since Dont’a Hightower, who was their 2012 first-round pick. Drake Maye comes next year.” Furthermore, Devon Witherspoon is now the second highest-paid cornerback in the league. The top two cornerbacks will meet up in the first game of the 2026 regular season on Wednesday night in a Super Bowl LX rematch.

Some of his stellar accomplishments were listed on patriots.com. In 2025, he led all qualified cornerbacks in catch rate allowed (43.4%). And ranked fourth best in passer rating allowed into his coverage (57.0) while covering the opponents No. 1 receiver on a weekly basis. In Super Bowl LX, he shadowed Seahawks star WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba on 15 routes, allowing only one catch for 16 yards with a pass breakup. He also had a huge interception late in the AFC Championship Game that helped seal a Patriots win.
The Patriots are looking to win another championship and build on the legacy left behind by former quarterback and coach, Tom Brady and Bill Belichick. Under head coach Mike Vrabel they have been able to turn things around after a few down seasons. Can they keep the momentum going this season?
