Seattle Seahawks Agreed to Contract Extension with Cornerback Devon Witherspoon
They are the reigning Super Bowl champions and their defense was a big part of their success. But then again Seattle is no stranger to dominating defenses. You’ll recall the Legion of Boom that included players such as Earl Thomas, Kam Chancellor, Brandon Browner and Richard Sherman. But their time was in the 2010’s and now a new crop of defensive heavy hitters has emerged. And one of them just got locked down. The Seattle Seahawks agreed to a contract extension with cornerback Devon Witherspoon.
Reporting on the contract details, NFL Insider Adam Schefter posted: “ESPN sources: three-time Pro-Bowl CB Devon Witherspoon and the Seahawks reached agreement on a four-year, $132 million extension and includes over $101 million guaranteed that now makes him the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history.” The Seahawks had already made it clear that they wanted to keep Witherspoon. They had exercised the fifth-year option on the guy who was their fifth overall pick in the 2023 draft, securing his rights though the 2027 season. But now they have locked up one of the top players with a long-term deal.
Witherspoon has created an impressive career in a short amount of time. As pointed out on the Seattle Seahawks website: Through three seasons, splitting his time between outside cornerback and nickel, Witherspoon has appeared in 43 games, recording 249 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, two interceptions, two forced fumbles and 32 passes defensed. In Seattle’s Super Bowl LX win, he recorded one sack, as well as a second quarterback hit that led to the interception Uchenna Nwosu returned for a touchdown.
His importance to the Seattle defense cannot be overstated. Hence late last season, head coach Mike MacDonald said, “He’s part of the engine that makes the whole thing go,” Macdonald said at the time. “He’s probably the sparkplug behind the whole thing.”

At only 25 years of age Witherspoon has proven to be a leader and a tone-setter. Proving his worthiness as a leader, he took part in all of the voluntary offseason program and has not missed anything in training camp. He explained his stance in an interview earlier this week saying:
“If you’re not practicing, you’re not getting ready for the season because everybody else in the league is practicing and they’re getting better. That’s where my mind is at right now. I’m focused on what I need to do right now, I’m not really worried about anything else.”
The Seahawks had already extended running back extraordinaire Jaxon Smith-Njigba in March. They had exercised the fifth-year option on both players, so it makes sense that they have now signed both players to massive extensions. They won the Super Bowl and are clearly hungry for more. Congratulations to Devon Witherspoon on getting a new contract making him the highest-paid cornerback!
