After Four-Year Hiatus the MLB Returns to the Field of Dreams in Iowa
It premiered in 1989 and is considered a baseball classic film. Starring Kevin Costner, he played a farmer who heard a voice urging him to build a baseball diamond in his cornfield. The film became a magical journey that blended Americana, baseball and hope into a feel-good story of redemption. Now after a four-year hiatus the MLB returns to the Field of Dreams in Iowa. They did an extensive refurbishment of one of America’s most famous ball fields. The game will feature the Philadelphia Phillies vs. the Minnesota Twins.
The MLB Field of Dreams will be presented by John Deere and stream on Netflix Thursday August 13 at 7:30 p.m. ET/4:30 p.m. PT. Adding excitement to the game is the fact that both the Phillies and Twins are in the playoff hunt. Both are battling for Wild Card spots in their respective leagues. And this game will mark the beginning of a three-game series that will continue a few hours up the road in Minneapolis over the weekend. The Twins will be considered the home team for this game.
Unfortunately, for the Phillies they are dealing with some injuries right now. Although they just acquired reliever Caleb Kilian at the August 3 deadline, he was placed on the IL earlier this week with a strained right oblique. They also lost reliever Brad Keller with a UCL tear in his right elbow. And they lost starting right fielder Adolis García (right lat surgery) for the season. But it’s good news for the Twins who are at full strength on the offensive side of the ball. However, they are down several starters including Joe Ryan. And relievers Cole Sands and Anthony Banda are out for the season.

But on the bright side, several MLB Hall of Famers are expected to emerge from the cornfields and onto the diamond during a pregame ceremony. As noted by mlb.com: Former Phillies who are scheduled to appear include Mike Schmidt, Steve Carlton and Scott Rolen. The Twins will be represented by Joe Mauer, Rod Carew, Bert Blyleven and Paul Molitor. Jim Thome and Jim Kaat, who played for both clubs, are also expected to take part in the pregame festivities.
The teams will not be playing on the same field from the movie. Instead, an 8,000-seat ballpark with typical Major League dimensions (335 feet down the lines; 380 feet to the alleys; and 400 feet to dead center) was constructed a quarter-mile west of the diamond from the movie. There is a pathway through the cornfield that leads to the ballpark, and a right-field wall with windows that show the surrounding 159 acres of corn. It should be an exciting night for all lovers of the Field of Dreams baseball game!
