Kelsie Whitmore Hits First WPBL Home Run as Firebells Defeat Los Angeles Queens
We all have been waiting. We knew it was coming and bound to happen soon. Well on Wednesday the big moment occurred. Kelsie Whitmore hits her first WPBL home run as the Firebells defeat the Los Angeles Queens.
The first overall pick in the inaugural Women’s Pro Baseball League (WPbl) draft was two-way player and right-handed pitcher Kelsie Whitmore. Selected by the San Francisco franchise. Whitmore is from San Diego and made her professional debut in the Bay Area with a coed team, the Sonoma Stompers, in 2016.
The 27-year-old has won two silver medals. Representing the United States at the Women’s Baseball World Cup and won gold at the 2015 Pan-Am Games in Toronto. So then, for Pitcher and outfielder Kelsie Whitmore being selected by San Francisco with the first pick was like a return “home.” Going back to where it all began.
Nonetheless, during Wednesday’s matchup Kelsie showed everyone exactly why she was drafted first overall. In the bottom of the third inning, Kelsie Whitmore hits her first home run in the WPBL off none other than the Los Angeles Queens’ Ayami Sato.
The Queens had been leading 2-1 by the third inning. But Kelsie’s hot bat instantly changed the scoreboard. Whitmore’s first homer of her WPBL career puts the Firebells on top 2-3.
But Whitmore was not finished. Not by a long shot. Kelsie goes yard AGAIN! Extending San Francisco’s lead to four.
However, the Kelsie show was not over. She would come to the plate again in the bottom of the sixth inning. The game would end with not one, not two, but THREE home runs for Kelsie Whitmore for the night.

The San Francisco Firebells would crush the Los Angeles Queens, 2-8. After her impressive performance, to the surprise of NO ONE, Kelsie Whitmore is named the Player of The Game. Whitmore finished with: 4 AB, 3 HR, 6 RBI. A great showing at the ballpark.
The Firebells also moved some things around in the WPBL standings. The Queens had been on top, but with Wednesday’s victory; the Firebells now tie Los Angeles with three wins and three losses for the season. Things are definitely picking up and getting interesting in Women’s baseball!
