No Trade for Vita Vea as the Nose Tackle Agreed to One-Year Extension with Tampa Bay Buccaneers
He’s been a defensive stalwart for the team over the last eight seasons. However, that didn’t stop him from requesting a trade last month from the team. But fortunately, the news broke that he will be staying in house. There will be no trade for Vita Vea, as the nose tackle agreed to a one-year extension with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
According to NFL Insider Adam Schefter: “ESPN sources: Two-time Pro-Bowl DT Vita Vea and the Buccaneers reached agreement today. On a one-year extension for $30 million, tying him to Tampa Bay for two more seasons. He gets $6 million in new money this season. Talks between Vea’s agent Collin Roberts of @excelfootball and the Buccaneers heated up Tuesday night. And resulted in the agreement today. The Buccaneers’ extension with Vita Vea means he’ll play his 9th and 10th NFL seasons with the same team that drafted him No. 12 overall in 2018.”
The Buccaneers have been working toward developing, retaining and rewarding its home-grown talent. Signing Vea is one more step in accomplishing that strategy. Hence the general manager had this to say on the matter:
“Vita is exactly the type of player and person we want to build around in Tampa Bay,” said General Manager Jason Licht. “He has been a dominant force in the middle of our defense, an exceptional teammate, and a tremendous leader in our locker room. One of the keys to our recent success has been our ability to draft, develop and re-sign core, foundational players who set the standard for what it means to be a Buccaneer. As one of our team leaders, Vita has played a big role in establishing that winning culture. And we are excited to have him continuing to help lead the way as we pursue our next championship.”

Providing more context of the deal is ESPN reporter Jenna Laine. She writes that the extension adds $6 million to the $18 million he was already set to make in 2026. For a total of $24 million, plus an additional $24 million in 2027, sources told ESPN. He will make $30 million guaranteed, a source told ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, but is effectively guaranteed all of the $48 million over the next two years, because it’s unlikely the team will cut him.
As for Vea he expressed his happiness with getting the deal done saying: “I always wanted to be a Buc, and I want to be a Buc for life,” said Vea on Thursday. “So I’m glad that we were able to get this done. This is just something we both had to figure out on both sides, and we got it squared away. I’m glad we can put this all behind us and move forward from here on out.”
