Audi Crooks’ Transfer Announcement Has Led to Speculation About Her NIL Offer
The college transfer portal is always a beehive of activity with students taking advantage of being able to move around. It used to be that once a player committed to a college, that’s where that person would stay for their college career. But times have changed and as Southwest Airlines used to say, “you’re free to move about the country.” Now players can benefit from their own NIL (Name, Image and Likeness) making money that was unheard of before at the college level. This past April Audi Crooks’ transfer announcement has led to speculation about her NIL offer.
Apparently there has been speculation going around about how much NIL money Crooks received. Some reports submitted that the amount would be $1.4 million. If that were true then Crooks would be making as much as A’ja Wilson, one of the highest-paid WNBA players, and four-time MVP. However, Crooks’ new coach, Jacie Hoyt has decided to speak up and put the rumors to rest. In a recent interview Hoyt said:
“There’s a lot of fake news out there. I don’t know how people can just make things up and put it out there as if it’s fact,” Hoyt said. “I’ll just be the first to say, the $1.4 million graphic that came out on Audi — that’s not true. I’m not going to get into the details on that, that’s really no one’s business, but everyone thinks that’s what it is now and that’s just kind of crazy.”

And as USA Today Sports went on to point out: “Crooks is certainly being compensated through either revenue sharing or Name, Image and Likeness. That’s true for countless women’s basketball players, especially for the top players who entered the transfer portal this offseason.”
Yes, the transfer portal has opened up the way for male and female athletes to earn well-deserved money as collegiate athletes. And since they are still students, whatever money they earn should remain private. Unlike the professional athletes who sign contracts, some of them pretty large.
Obviously, NIL deals affect which college a student will choose to attend. Hence the flurry of activity we see in the transfer portal. If the colleges want to slow things down, then they will need to come up with more precise rules for the NIL transfers. Right now, it’s safe to say the transfer portal is the new Wild West and just about anything goes. But until action is taken these transfers will continue. So, let the students do whatever works best for them right now.
