NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell Is Comfortable with Game Being Played in Paris on Sunday
eople are protesting in northern France. But that’s not surprising since revolutions are a part of French history and culture. What is not a part of their culture are American NFL football games. Nevertheless, a game will take place at the Stade de France on October 26 at 9:30AM eastern time. And NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is comfortable with the game being played in Paris on Sunday. The game, featuring the New Orleans Saints versus the Pittsburgh Steelers, will happen despite the civil unrest in the city.
This will be the first regular-season game in Paris, and the NFL has no plans to cancel it. The league issued a statement last Sunday:
“Preparations continue as scheduled for NFL events and the game at Stade de France next Sunday,” the league said in a statement Sunday.
“We continue to work closely with local authorities and partners on all operational and security matters. We are also providing the two clubs with regular updates. There’s been no disruption or impact at league sites.”
League statement to ESPN: “We’re excited for the first-ever regular season game in Paris, and preparations continue as scheduled for NFL events and the game at Stade de France on October 25. As we do for every NFL game, including our international games, we work closely with local authorities and partners on all operational and security matters. We look forward to welcoming fans to Paris later this month.”
Conditions in Paris have not changed since those statements were made. A weekend event for Pittsburgh Steelers fans has been cancelled because of security concerns due to the street protests. According to ESPN, the event was to be held at a bar in the Bastile neighborhood.

Planning such a large-scale event in another country takes time, money and careful collaboration. However, is the expense worth the effort? Will this game result in more revenue for the league? The Global soccer (football) market generates $32 billion in revenue, while the NFL generates $24 billion. No single soccer league or governing body generates as much revenue as the NFL. The NFL is the richest sports league in the world by annual revenue.
There are definitely NFL fans around the globe. However, soccer is still the game of choice for most people in the world. NFL fans are willing to travel to the United States to take in a game and do some sightseeing. It seems like it would be simpler to let NFL fans come to America, rather than sending games to the world.
