Los Angeles Sparks Owner Looking to Sell the Team for Record Setting Price Tag
The WNBA has become a hot commodity just over the last couple of years. It seems that everyone now wants a piece of what is becoming an enormous pie. One man had bought into the league over a decade ago and now is seeking to sell his team. Los Angeles Sparks’ owner Mark Walter is looking to sell the team for record setting price tag. He wants an unprecedented $700 million for the historical WNBA franchise. Walter recently sold the Los Angeles Lakers after just purchasing them a year ago. He sold the team to Bob Iger and Jared Kushner for $12.5 billion.
Walter has been selling off sports franchises since his federal investigation for loan fraud by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). He sold his stake in Premier League team Chelsea and received around $1.3 million from the sale. When he bought the Sparks in 2014, he paid $10 million for the team. Naturally with the WNBA popularity exploding they are worth much more than that figure. Sportico values the team at a still-WNBA-record-setting $400 million. But Walter is looking to get almost double that amount. If he is able to get the $700 million, he will make about 70 times the original cost! I suppose you could see that as excellent business dealing. Or perhaps just simply excessive greed.
Either way you look at, there is a lot of money involved. The question is whether someone wants to pay that amount for a WNBA franchise. Will it pay for itself down the road? No one knows at this point. Are there buyers interested in making the purchase. That is also an unknown entity. So, we’ll have to see what happens next.

Given the state of the Los Angeles Sparks he may not be able to get his asking price. They finished with a 16-28 record for the 2026 season. They moved on without general manager Raegan Pebley in July and fired coach Lynne Roberts after a disappointing 37-51 record in two years. In addition, the team’s two best players, Kelsey Plum and Nneka Ogwumike, were traded and retired, respectively. Now the team is led by Cameron Brink, Dearica Hamby, and Ariel Atkins, a prized 2026 offseason acquisition. We’ll see if they are a winning combination next season.
In the meantime, Walter wants someone to break their bank for the franchise. However, Walter is keeping the Los Angeles Dodgers in his portfolio. He has no plans to sell that 2-time world championship team for any price. As for any theories that his companies have committed any fraud, he denies them stating: “Over the past several weeks, multipronged attacks against TWG have been advanced by unnamed sources with self-serving interests that have been reported in the media. It is important to set the record straight,” it read. “TWG stands firmly behind the integrity of its business and remains focused on continuing to deliver value to its stakeholders.”
Stay tuned.
