Red Sox Acquired All-Star Adley Rutschman in Trade With Orioles Before Adley Could See Spider-Man
Monday’s trade deadline was drama and sports cinema. But one player literally had to leave the cinema behind after receiving trade news. The Boston Red Sox acquired three-time All-Star catcher Adley Rutschman in a trade with the Baltimore Orioles before Adley could see Spider-Man.
Although, he really wanted to see the latest Spidey installment, it hasn’t dampened his excitement to be a member of the Boston organization. In a Tuesday presser, Adley Rutschman said this on joining the RedSox:
“Just from playing here, the city loves baseball, always has a great atmosphere, I’m excited to play in it… it’s always been fun to come here and play.”
However, Adley’s former teammates aren’t taking the trade as well. Colton Cowser was holding back his emotions while discussing how much Adley Rutschman meant to the Orioles team — and to him as a friend. Cowser mentioned,
“He’s truly gonna be missed here. As a friend, he’s someone who I’ve grown really close with. He’s gonna be in my wedding. He’s someone who I’m gonna miss dearly on a day-to-day basis.
“That part sucks — just not getting to see him every day. But he’s going to do great things, and I’ll always be in his corner.”
Adley Rutschman, Colton Cowser, Ryan Mountcastle and Gunnar Henderson were reportedly about to see “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” in theaters. A blockbuster Marvel film that made almost a billion dollars upon release. However, the now former Baltimore catcher received the call that he had been traded, Cowser said.
They didn’t end up seeing the movie, obviously. Instead the group of friends said their goodbyes. “It was pretty emotional,” Cowser said. “All I could do was give him a hug and tell him that I’m here for him and I love him.”

Adley Rutschman is currently on the injured list with wrist inflammation. However, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald and the Girl at the Game podcast, reports that Rutschman feels like recovery is going well. Starr says that Adley Rutschman spoke in the Red Sox clubhouse and confirmed he just began swinging and said he’s feeling good, but he has to meet with the team medical staff to figure out “next steps.”
Yardbarker’s Daniel Fox added, “There is not a doubt in mind that, if Rutschman comes back healthy and plays at a reasonably productive level the rest of the season, the Red Sox will make a significant effort to extend him whenever the lockout ends. And given how many injuries he has had, you think Adley would be interested in some long-term security.”
