Growth is always a good thing. The National Basketball Association has experienced some ups and downs in recent years; but the ship seems to be righting itself in the correct course and direction. On Wednesday, it was announced that the NBA completed its best three-year attendance stretch ever and experienced its highest regular-season viewership in 24 years.

Looks like Wemby discussing and doing his part to usher in “ethical” basketball has been a huge positive for the league. Many fans can confirm that watching matchups like Spurs vs OKC, and the Play-In Tournament featuring the Charlotte Hornets and Miami Heat have been very entertaining. Plus, watching Jokic’s triple-doubles, Cooper Flagg’s 50-piece, Jaylen holding down Boston fort plus Tatum’s early return, Luka’s 15k points, Harden making every postseason for 17 years; SGA passing Wilt, Bam’s 83-point game and LeBron garnering the most wins in NBA history has only added more spice and intrigue to this season.

Well all these impressive performances and moments during this season and over the years have culminated into the NBA enjoying some great success. Regarding these developments, the league revealed,

170 million people in the U.S. watched NBA games across ABC/ESPN, Amazon Prime Video, NBC/Peacock and NBA TV during the regular season – the most in 24 years and up 86% vs. last season.”

Total time spent viewing the NBA this season was up +22% across national partners. On broadcast networks it was up +128%. Furthermore, NBA viewing was up by 6.5 billion minutes across all outlets this season; but up by 12.8 billion minutes on broadcast. Broadcast TV accounted for +197% of the NBA’s growth.

The Association also saw growth in attendance. Attendance numbers: 22.18M fans, 18,108 per game, 97% arena capacity, 11 teams with sellout seasons. This is the third straight year hitting those marks.

A few last interesting tidbits that you might like to note. Viewership for NBA Cup group play games was up 90% from last season.
Additionally, the audience for the All-Star Game on NBC, averaging 8.8 million viewers, was the largest for the league’s midseason showcase event since 2011. Therefore, looks like the NBA’s media deal is working out well.

Prime Video was part of the league’s television rights package for the first time this season. While NBC/Peacock returned for the first time in a generation. The league signed a new 11-year, $76 billion-plus media rights deal in 2024 to show games on those two platforms along with ABC/ESPN and NBA TV. Those deals kicked in at the start of this season.
