NBA and NBPA Rule in Favor of Luka Doncic and Cade Cunningham on Extraordinary Circumstances Challenge

They played their hearts all season and left it all on the court. Unfortunately, they came up just shy of qualifying for end of season awards. But a verdict has finally come to the fore regarding their eligibility. On Thursday it was announced that the NBA and NBPA have ruled in favor of Lakers’ Luka Doncic and Pistons’ Cade Cunningham on their Extraordinary Circumstances Challenge for the 65-game award rule. Making both players eligible for all 2025-26 season honors such as MVP and All-NBA teams.

Doncic and Cade had played most of the required games but had a few unexpected events take them away from the game. Hence, the reason that they filed appeals. Luka had a personal family matter to attend to; and Cunningham had a major health concern that caused him to miss time as well. Nevertheless, now this pair has the opportunity to be rewarded for their hard work and efforts. Shams Charania reported on the NBPA and NBA’s final verdict stating,

“Just in: The NBA and NBPA have ruled in favor of Lakers’ Luka Doncic and Pistons’ Cade Cunningham on their Extraordinary Circumstances Challenge for the 65-game award rule, making both eligible for all 2025-26 season honors such as MVP and All-NBA teams, sources tell ESPN.

Doncic missed 2 games in December due to the birth of his child abroad and Cunningham had a collapsed lung. Minnesota’s Anthony Edwards filed a challenge as well and his case was advanced to an independent arbitrator, but was denied and is not eligible for awards, sources said.”

The official statement from the National Basketball Association’s Communications page reads as follows:

“NBA and National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) have agreed, in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), that Detroit Pistons guard Cade Cunningham and Los Angeles Lakers guard Luka Dončić are eligible for all annual awards for the 2025-26 NBA regular season.

Cunningham played in 63 qualified games due in part to missing 12 games as a result of a collapsed lung that was diagnosed on March 17. Dončić played in 64 qualified games due in part to missing two games to attend the birth of his daughter in Slovenia. The NBA and NBPA agreed that, taking into account the totality of the circumstances for Cunningham and Dončić, each player qualified for awards under the extraordinary circumstances provision in the CBA.”

Luka Doncic was extremely grateful about the final decision and outcome of this ruling. Luka took to social media to say,

“I am grateful to the NBPA for advocating on my behalf and to the NBA for their fair decision. It was so important to me to be present for the birth of my daughter in December and I appreciate Mark, Jeanie, Rob, JJ, and the entire Lakers organization for fully supporting me and allowing me to travel to be there. This season has been so special to me because of what my teammates and I have been able to accomplish, and I am honored to have the opportunity to be considered for the league’s end-of-season awards.”

So then, some very good news for Cade and Luka. However, Edwards’ case was not met with the same satisfaction. Regarding Anthony Edwards, the league confirmed, “Additionally, Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards, who played in 60 qualified games, filed an extraordinary circumstances challenge under the CBA, seeking award eligibility before an independent arbitrator. Edwards’ challenge was denied and, as a result, he is not eligible for annual awards for the 2025-26 NBA regular season.”
