NFL Taking Preemptive Action Onboarding Replacement Officials with Referees CBA Ending Soon

We love to complain about NFL refereeing officials and all the blown calls we perceive. However, without officials the games would be complete and total chaos. Hence the reason why an official association exists for referees. But the collective bargaining agreement the NFL Referees Association signed in September 2019 is ending in May 2026. And so far, no new agreement has been reached yet. Therefore, the NFL is taking preemptive action by onboarding replacement officials with the Referees CBA ending soon.

Covering this story, NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero reported the following on his social media account:

“The NFL informed clubs today that the league’s officiating staff has begun onboarding potential replacement officials and will conduct training sessions next month in preparation for assigning the officials to offseason practices starting June 1, according to a memo obtained by NFL Network.

Several officials have already completed required background checks and will soon be given physical exams. The league reiterated in the memo that it “remains committed to reaching a fair and reasonable agreement with the NFL Referees Association but will be fully prepared should the current agreement expire” on May 31.”

Apparently, the NFL wants to ensure there won’t be any delays or disruptions to the upcoming 2026 NFL football season as they try to work out a deal with the officials. Although many of us have had and continue to have issues with NFL officiating the referees are an essential part of the game. Without properly trained officials the game could devolve into something unorganized and unwatchable. So, it makes sense for the NFL to have a contingency plan in place if a deal is not reached.

In spite of these advanced preparations some may view the potential replacements as ineffective or even useless. However, that’s where the advanced training comes in for the potential replacements. The training is necessary because of the responsibility each official has. According to the Referees Association: “Each has a specific role and responsibilities that make it possible to correctly and consistently call games at football’s highest level.”

However, many of the officials have years of experience so it could be difficult for the replacements to step in and do a good job. Nevertheless, I’m sure they will do their best and perhaps even better than the tenured officials. After all, how many times have NFL fans complained about the officiating being substandard? At the end of the day the most important thing is for whoever is making the calls on the field to get them correct. Because nobody likes to see a poorly officiated NFL game.
