Los Angeles Rams Reach One-Year $55 Million Extension With Quarterback Matthew Stafford

Los Angeles came SO close to getting to the big dance again last season. Therefore, it makes perfect sense why they would want to keep their successful formula in place. Thursday evening, the Los Angeles Rams announced they have reached a one-year $55 million extension with their quarterback Matthew Stafford.

While age may be somewhat of a factor or concern, the Rams like Stafford himself; feel that the high performance QB still has plenty in the tank. Truth be told, Matthew has been a beast for LA. It wasn’t too long ago that Stafford helped the franchise to hoist a Lombardi.

The Rams won a Super Bowl with Matthew Stafford in 2021, a game that was played at SoFi Stadium. Now, with a new contract finalized and coming off an MVP season, they’ll look to win another Super Bowl this year – which is interestingly, again at SoFi Stadium.

The Rams finished the 2025-2026 regular season with a 12-5 record and secured the No. 5 seed in the NFC as a Wild Card. Upon entering the postseason, Los Angeles played the Carolina Panthers in the Wild Card Round, winning 34-31. They then defeated the Chicago Bears in the next round before being eliminated in the NFC Championship Game in a close 31-27 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

NFL insider Adam Schefter reported on the Stafford contract extension including financial details. He states,

“ESPN sources: reigning NFL MVP Matthew Stafford and the Rams reached agreement today on a one-year, $55 million extension worth up to $60 million with incentives. Stafford now has two years and up to $105 million remaining on his deal with the Rams.

This upcoming season will be Matthew Stafford’s 18th NFL season as he enters his age-38 season.

He’ll turn 39 on February 7, one week before the Super Bowl in Los Angeles.”

Nonetheless, the Rams understand that they still need to build for the future even though the current situation is still working. And they have already taken steps to stay competitive.

During the offseason the Rams used the No. 13 pick on Ty Simpson, viewed as the eventual successor to Matthew Stafford. Moreover, Los Angeles now gives Stafford a significant raise that puts him in the $50 million-plus per-year club for QBs. Therefore, the Rams have taken care of both worlds. Staying competitive now, while building for the future.
