Yankees Manager Aaron Boone Ejected by Umpire Hunter Wendelstedt

It is a very frustrating day for New York fans and the pinstripes ball club. The Yankees manager Aaron Boone is ejected by umpire Hunter Wendelstedt during a matchup against the Oakland Athletics. Worse part is; the ejection may have occurred due to a fan’s outburst during the game and conflict.

All of this drama went down right near the start of the game. During the first inning. Boone was not happy with a particular call and things seem to escalate from there.

Furthermore, anyone who has ever been to a ballpark knows fans yell all sorts of things. When the game is going well. And especially when things are heading into a very bad direction.

Umpiring calls have also come to be a big issue with fans. With “bad calls” being seen as a problem that is majorly undermining the integrity of the game. However, Wendelstedt maintains that his handling of the matter was quite fair.

Aaron Boone, however, feels much differently. There’s video footage showing Boone even pointing towards the fan at the center of the misunderstanding. After the game in a presser Boone states,

It’s embarrassing. It really is a bad — it’s embarrassing. … Obviously, it was not right.”

However, what about the umpire? What is Hunter Wendelstedt’s account or side of this story? He informs the press,

“There was a pitch down. I thought it hit him, the batter. I sent him to first base. The Yankees asked me to appeal to first base, which I did. The hitter went down. The Yankees’ dugout started, you know, obviously arguing that situation kind of in my opinion too extreme.”

Did anyone inform the umpire that what he thought he heard from the dugout actually came from a fan in the crowd? Apparently, yes. In the heat of the moment, Wendelstedt then said to Aaron Boone, “I don’t care who said it, you’re gone.”

Interesting. Moreover, Umpire Hunter Wendelstedt continues on with the telling of his account stating,

“I know what Aaron was saying that it was a fan above the dugout. That’s fine and dandy. There were plenty of fans that were yelling at me before I called a pitch till the end of the game. Aaron Boone is the manager of the New York Yankees and is responsible for everything that happens in that dugout.

In my opinion, the cheap shot came towards the far end (of the dugout). So instead of me being aggressive and walking down to the far end and trying to figure out who might have said it, I don’t want to eject a ballplayer.

Apparently what he said was there was a fan right above the dugout. This isn’t my first ejection. In the entirety of my career, I have never ejected a player or a manager for something a fan has said. I understand that’s going to be part of a story or something like that because that’s what Aaron was portraying. I heard something come from the far end of the dugout, had nothing to do with his area but he’s the manager of the Yankees. So he’s the one that had to go.”

Wild. Fortunately, one game does not always determine whether a team succeeds in baseball. It is a long season and today things did not go the Yankees way. They lost to Oakland, 2-0.

But, all is still good for New York. They are 15-8 so far this season and have been very dominant. So we are sure that Aaron Judge, Juan Soto, Boone and the boys will shake this one off; and get back to the job at hand. Returning to the playoffs.
