Victor Wembanyama Ejected on Flagrant Foul in Spurs Game 4 Loss—No Suspension

It was a crucial point of the series and both teams needed all their players available. Unfortunately, San Antonio would lose their defensive superstar. On Sunday, Victor Wembanyama was ejected on a flagrant foul in the Spurs versus Wolves Game 4 loss and will not face suspension.

Victor was removed from the high energy, physical matchup during the first half in the second quarter. NBA.com recounted the events in order to explain why the ejection was warranted. The National Basketball Association stated,

“San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama was ejected for throwing an elbow at the throat of Minnesota Timberwolves forward Naz Reid early in the second quarter of Game 4 of their rugged Western Conference semifinal series on Sunday night.

Wembanyama was whistled for an offensive foul as soon as he struck Reid, who had swarmed the Kia NBA Defensive Player of the Year outside the paint along with teammate Jaden McDaniels after the 7-foot-4 Spurs center rebounded a missed 3-pointer.

After a video review of the play, the foul was upgraded to a Flagrant 2 for excessive contact above the neck. That penalty triggers an automatic ejection, immediately swinging the balance of a pivotal game in the series toward the Timberwolves.”

Wemby’s ejection led some to believe that Victor might be suspended as well. However, according to NBA rules Wembanyama does not have the amount of “points” to warrant such disciplinary action.

The NBA uses a playoff penalty-points system:  Flagrant 1 = 1 point ; Flagrant 2 = 2 points. Automatic suspensions begin once a player exceeds 3 total points in a single postseason. This is Wemby’s first offense with no prior history of this type of physicality against an opponent so he stands at just 2 points. He will have to avoid garnering anymore flagrants to avoid a future suspension during the playoffs.

ESPN’s Shams Charania also confirmed this development Monday morning. He stated, “There will be no further discipline for Spurs star Victor Wembanyama after he was ejected for elbowing Naz Reid in Minnesota on Sunday night, sources tell ESPN. No suspension, no fine. Wembanyama will play in Game 5 against the Timberwolves on Tuesday night in San Antonio.”
