No Retirement for Steve Kerr as He and Golden State Warriors Agreed to Two-Year Contract

No Retirement for Steve Kerr as He and Golden State Warriors Agreed to Two-Year Contract

After we thought he was riding off into the sunset, it turns out he will be returning for another two seasons. Initially, he joined the team as head coach in 2014 and with Steph Curry there built a dynasty. Now it appears he wants to stick around a little longer. Hence there will be no retirement for Steve Kerr as he and Golden State Warriors agreed to a two-year contract. So, apparently, Kerr is not done yet coaching even though he had previously said he would retire. ESPN Senior NBA Insider, Shams Charania reported the following on x.com:

“Breaking: Steve Kerr has agreed on a new two-year contract to return as head coach of the Golden State Warriors, his agents told @shamscharania@anthonyVslaterand @ramonashelburne. The new deal will keep Steve Kerr as the highest paid coach in the NBA annually, sources tell ESPN.”

Earlier in the season Kerr had said that the Warriors dynasty was over. And his contract had set to expire at the end of the 2025-2026 season which the Warriors had not extended before the season began. After the Warriors’ play-in loss to the Arizona Suns, Kerr had said that all coaching jobs have an expiration date. As well as expressed, his gratitude for his time with the team. In other words, it didn’t actually sound like Kerr would be back as the head coach of the Golden State Warriors. But now we have this report dropping from Charania.

In fact, Charania said that this contract keeps Kerr as the highest paid coach in the NBA. With Kerr now having decided to stay with the team instead of retiring they will be looking for a star-caliber player to pair with Curry.

The team got Jimmy Butler the previous season who worked well with Curry and the team. But unfortunately, was hurt in the 2025-2026 season. It is hoped that he will be back for the next season. They also acquired Kristaps Porziņģis in exchange for Buddy Hield and the 7’2″ center has made his mark with the team making three pointers. However, they still have Draymond Green and Brandon Podziemski both of whom can be liabilities rather than assets. On the bright side they have promising rookie Will Richard who deserves to get more playing time.

But with Kerr back in the fold who knows how the players currently on the roster will be used. Or what big-time star they will try to acquire for next season. At any rate, Kerr will have to decide the best usage of the players currently in-house. That could go a long way in restoring the sparkle of the Golden State Warriors.
